It is also the name of their new Berlin-based studio; both book and studio derive from a diploma thesis at the University of the Arts, Berlin. Something Fantastic calls for increased consciousness in architectural thought and action, particularly in relation to the environment, energy and contemporary politics. Excerpts from thinkers and theorists – from Thomas Hobbes to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – and interviews, including with Markus Miessen and Werner Sobek, inform a publication determined to call for change, and offer hope for the future. International experts present concepts of collective knowledge, the notion of public space, thoughts on the relationship between (new) media and (cultural) society, and insights into product management and reception. The result is a fascinating journey into the future of an age-old institution, obligatory reading for architects, librarians and users alike. [more ▼] Design and complex business problems Today’s society is making great leaps in its effort to obtain ever more and ever more specific know-how in various specialties, with the consequence that the structures of today’s companies are become increasingly complex. This in turn leads to problems at the points of interface, which calls for a comprehensive approach to solutions.Creating Desired Futures defines design a creative, analytical method to develop and explore alternative solutions to complex problems, and it shows that design is particularly well suited to the business world’s current need for innovative strategies. In twenty-four essays by designers, architects, and representatives of large companies such as Nike and Shell, the book shows how such a design-based approach can help define, assess, and solve problems for companies. It presents not only specific strategies from actual practice but also innovative approaches from the world of corporate consulting. Essays by researchers and teachers discuss theoretical aspects of the subject "Design Thinking." [more ▼] Bettina Pousttchi staged photographs of the Palace of the Republic, which has since been pulled down, so that around 800 individual posters attached to the exterior walls of the temporary art gallery give the impression of a miniature version of the former East German ceremonial building. The artist achieves confusing moments through image processing. A digitally created line effect is reminiscent of close-circuit camera footage or a secret peek through closed blinds. Pousttchi’s staged photographs reflect on the individual’s faculty of memory and the suggestive role that the medium of photography plays in it. [more ▼] The artists Agnieszka Kurant and Aleksandra Wasilkowska are representing Poland at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice 2010, August 29 – November 21, 2010. The Emergency Exit installation not only merges the disciplines of architecture and art within this project, it is the culmination of a collaborative dialogue between Agnieszka Kurant and Aleksandra Wasilkowska that unites their interests and professional experiences. While the installation itself offers a unique and challenging experience within the Biennale context, there is also a specific set of ideas and a particular discourse in which the project is rooted. The Polish Pavilion thus represents both a cultural and epistemological moment that we attempt to unpack in this catalogue. Importantly, this background is not purely to be found in literary, theoretical or discursive texts. Rather, we hope that the many photographs, cultural references, and graphics give as much meaning to the pavilion as the essays we have brought together. In their essay Agnieszka Kurant and Aleksandra Wasilkowska present the ideas behind Emergency Exit and the concept of “urban portable holes.” This is complemented by an archive of reference images, theories, films, and documents that inspire and support their work within expanding and interrelated subjects: “Utopian Ruins,” “Urban Exploration,” “Materialization of Utopias,” “ComplexCity,” and “Self-organization,” “Extremely Rare Events,” “Holes,“ “Fictional Sports and Escapism.” [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 12 (0 UL)![]() ; Miessen, Markus ![]() Book published by AA Publications (2010) London +10 focuses on London over the last 20 years, interpreting it as a ‘live city’ and speculating on the relationship between the live realm of the city and its urban fabric. [more ▼] London +10 focuses on London over the last 20 years, interpreting it as a ‘live city’ and speculating on the relationship between the live realm of the city and its urban fabric. In parallel to this central topic, the book will include a number of speculative projects carried out by the AA’s Diploma Unit 10 that have attempted to integrate this realm into the design of alternative urban strategies. The book addresses London by means of themes such as politics, control, crime, sex, integration, events, time, infrastructure, architecture, regeneration and terrorism. These form part of the everyday experience of London and inform the concept of Direct Urbanism. The structure of the book is governed by these specific themes and each one will be expanded by means of a topical article, a short essay and selected illustrations of related projects. The book includes a number of speculative projects carried out by Diploma Unit 10 of the internationally acclaimed Architectural Association School of Architecture. [more ▼] Welcome to Harmonistan! Over the last decade, the term “participation” has become increasingly overused. When everyone has been turned into a participant, the often uncritical, innocent, and romantic use of the term has become frightening. Supported by a repeatedly nostalgic veneer of worthiness, phony solidarity, and political correctness, participation has become the default of politicians withdrawing from responsibility. Similar to the notion of an independent politician dissociated from a specific party, this third part of Miessen’s “Participation” trilogy encourages the role of what he calls the “crossbench practitioner,” an “uninterested outsider” and “uncalled participator” who is not limited by existing protocols, and who enters the arena with nothing but creative intellect and the will to generate change. Miessen argues for an urgent inversion of participation, a model beyond modes of consensus. Instead of reading participation as the charitable savior of political struggle, Miessen candidly reflects on the limits and traps of its real motivations. Rather than breading the next generation of consensual facilitators and mediators, he argues for conflict as an enabling, instead of disabling, force. The book calls for a format of conflictual participation—no longer a process by which others are invited “in,” but a means of acting without mandate, as uninvited irritant: a forced entry into fields of knowledge that arguably benefit from exterior thinking. Sometimes, democracy has to be avoided at all costs. [more ▼] Cognitive Architecture questions of how evolving modalities - from bio-politics to noo-politics - can be mapped upon the city under contemporary conditions of urbanization and globalization. Noo-politics, most broadly understood as a power exerted over the life of the mind, re-configures perception, memory and attention, and also implicates potential ways and means by which neurobiological architecture is undergoing reconfiguration. This volume, motivated by theories such as ‘cognitive capitalism’ and concepts such as ‘neural plasticity’, shows how architecture and urban processes and products commingle to form complex systems that produce novel forms of networks that empower the imagination and constitute the cultural landscape. This volume rethinks the relations between form and forms of communication, calling for a new logic of representation; it examines the manner in which information, with its non-hierarchical and distributed format is contributing both to the sculpting of brain and production of mind. Cognitive Architecture brings together renowned specialists in the areas of political and aesthetic philosophy, neuroscience, socio-cultural and architecture theory, visual and spatial theorists and practitioners; the contributions elucidate original ideas for thinking the city as a framework for possible gestations of noo-politics. With contributions from Andreas Angelidakis, Lisa Blackman, Ina Blom, Felicity Callard, Suparna Choudry, Jordan Crandall, Elie During, Keller Easterling, Lukas Ebensperger, Boris Groys, Janet Harbord, Deborah Hauptmann, Patrik Healy, Maurizio Lazzarato, Daniel Marguilles, Markus Miessen, Yann Moulier Boutang, Warren Neidich, John Protevi, Steven Quartz, Andreij Radman, Philippe Rahm, John Rajchman, Patricia Reed, Gabriel Rockhill, J.A. This insightful examination of the added value of a well thought-out presentation in physical space is especially relevant for those working as designers, scenographers, interior decorators, and set designers, but also for those in advertising and marketing.
