We investigate the performances of the time-switching (TS) and power-splitting (PS) based energy harvesting models in a two-hop relay assisted network where the end-users are capable of decoding information and harvesting energy concurrently. In particular, we consider joint resource allocation and relay selection to realize Simultaneous Wireless Transmission of Information and Energy (Wi-TIE) in a multi-carrier multi-user cooperative system where the relays employ the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol. First, we formulate based on the TS and PS Wi-TIE architectures an optimization problem to maximize the sum of energy harvested at the end-users, taking into consideration each user's quality-of-service (QoS) requirement as well as power constraints at the transmit and relaying nodes. We then solve the formulated problem to optimize the users' Wi-TIE splitting factors along with relay-user coupling, sub-carrier-user assignment, sub-carrier pairing, and power allocation. Finally, we demonstrate the benefits of the proposed framework via numerical results. [less ▲]

In this paper, we investigate resource allocation and relay selection in a dual-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based multi-user network where amplify-and-forward (AF) enabled relays facilitate simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) to the end-users. In this context, we address an optimization problem to maximize the end-users’ sum-rate subjected to transmit power and harvested energy constraints. Furthermore, the problem is formulated for both time-switching (TS) and power-splitting (PS) SWIPT schemes. We aim at optimizing the users’ SWIPT splitting factors as well as sub-carrier–destination assignment, sub-carrier pairing, and relay–destination coupling metrics. This kind of joint evaluation is combinatorial in nature with non-linear structure involving mixed-integer programming. In this vein, we propose a sub-optimal low complex sequential resource distribution (SRD) method to solve the aforementioned problem. The performance of the proposed SRD technique is compared with a semi-random resource allocation and relay selection approach. Simulation results reveal the benefits of the proposed design under several parameter values with various operating conditions to illustrate the efficiency of SWIPT schemes for the proposed techniques. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation and relay selection in a two-hop relay-assisted multi-user network, where the end users support Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT). In particular, we consider single source assisted by a set of spatially distributed relays able to amplify-and-forward orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals carrying both data and power at the same time. The users are assumed to implement a power splitting technique where the received signal is orthogonally split in two streams of different power levels, where one signal stream is sent to the power harvesting module while the other is converted to baseband for information decoding. We aim at optimizing the users’ power splitting ratios as well as the relay, carrier and power assignment so that the end-users’ sum-rate is maximized subject to transmitted and harvested power constraints. Such joint optimization is combinatorial in nature with a non-convex structure. Therefore, we present a sub-optimal low complex solution based on the harmonic mean of the two-hop relay channel coefficients. Simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithm provides significant performance gains in comparison with a semi-random resource allocation and relay selection approach. [less ▲]

We study a problem of relay selection in a two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) enabled relaying network for facilitating simultaneous Wireless Transmission of Information and Energy (Wi-TIE) to a destination able to perform both information processing and energy harvesting concurrently. Considering the time switching (TS) and power splitting (PS) based Wi-TIE schemes, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the overall user data rate while ensuring a minimum harvested power. In this context, we obtain suitable closed form solution and demonstrate through simulation results the Rate-Energy (R-E) trade-off in two different scenarios: (i) with only the relay assisted link, and (ii) with the direct link together with the relay assisted link. The anticipated exponential growth in network traffic is posing significant challenges for the implementation of 5G networks. In this context, a major problem is the backhaul network which acts as a bottleneck preventing the efficient flow of ultra-dense and heavy traffic between the end users and the core network. Spectrum scarcity has emerged as the primary problem encountered when trying to accommodate the traffic upsurge. In this paper, we investigate the carrier allocation problem in the context of Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Backhaul (ISTB) networks. In particular, we consider the satellite component to be integrated with the conventional terrestrial wireless backhaul network thus providing evident benefits in terms of data-offloading. To enhance the overall spectral efficiency of the proposed network, we consider that both terrestrial and satellite segments operate in the Ka band, where the sharing between terrestrial microwave links and satellite communications is already allowed. A novel carrier allocation algorithm based on fairness is proposed, which ensures that all backhaul links are continuously active to satisfy the operator's coverage needs. The problem is NP-hard by definition. As a consequence, we present a two-step sequential carrier allocation strategy specifically tailored to tackle the interference issues emerging from the spectral co-existence. Supporting results based on numerical simulations show that the proposed carrier allocation can provide a 2x improvement in terms of spectral efficiency when compared to benchmark terrestrial-only backhaul networks.
