Three experiments investigated the operation of prototypical person categories, which were either at a superordinate or at a subordinate level of abstraction, on person memory. In Experiment 1, a recognition memory experiment, subjects received person attributes describing fictional target persons, each description pertaining to one of the two abstraction levels. Distractors in the recognition test varied in degree of relatedness to a prototypical category. Distractors that were related to the corresponding category were falsely recognized, if the category was at a superordinate level, but not for a subordinate category. This revealed a significant bias in recognition toward conceptually related but nonpresented items only at the superordinate level. In Experiment 2 which used a conceptual priming procedure subjects responded faster to distractor items related to a superordinate category than to those related to a subordinate category. Experiment 3 replicated the difference between levels of abstraction when subjects’ task was to recall rather than to recognize the presented attributes. The findings imply that person categories at different levels of abstraction operate differentially on person memory and restrict assumptions from prototype theory to a superordinate level. [less ▲]

In this paper, relations between text comprehension and social cognition are discussed. It is argued that theories and research methods from the domain of text comprehension are well suited to highlight the processing of person information. In research on person memory and impression formation stimulus materials are used which typically consist of a listwise presentation of traits and/or behavior describing statements. In contrast, research on text comprehension yields evidence that a crucial component of successful comprehension is provided by relations between the statements. These induce a coherent and hierarchically organized structure rather than an unorganized list. It is argued that analyzing impression formation and social judgment from text descriptions of persons provides a superior approach to social cognition by representing the complexity of relations between person attributes and their cognitive representations more adequately. Current models of the social cognition-behavior link assume that activating a trait category induces an expectancy about a target person and a specific behavior towards this person. 60 subjects participated in an experiment where 15 subjects were randomly assigned to the role of a target person. Each target interacted consecutively with three subjects whose category-dependent expectancy towards the target was varied. To activate different categories, subjects received attributes of a typical «extravert», a typical «introvert» or no information in the control condition. The analysis of the interaction data confirmed the hypothesis. Subjects’ behavior was significantly influenced by the prior activated category where two factors affected the quality of the behavior: (a) the content of the category and (b) the consistency between subjects’ expectancy and targets’ behavior. Theoretical implications of the results are discussed. [less ▲]

In this paper methods to cluster analyze two-mode data are discussed which assume that both objects and attributes contribute to the uncovering of meaningful patterns of clusters. Two-mode methods are reviewed and criteria are proposed which aim at a comparison and evaluation of the reviewed methods. The selected criteria show that most two-mode approaches su®er from drawbacks con- cerning interpretation of the data, convergence of algorithms, uniqueness of solu- tions or applicability to larger data sets. They imply some suggestions for future directions in the development of two{ and three{mode cluster analysis. [less ▲]
