GeoGebra is free, multi-platform, open-source dynamic mathematics software with rapidly growing worldwide popularity. The basic idea of the software is to join dynamic geometry, algebra, and calculus, which other packages treat separately, into a single easy-to-use package for learning and teaching mathematics from elementary through university level. Participants of this workshop will be introduced to the versatile possibilities of GeoGebra in hands-on activities in geometry, algebra, and calculus. They will learn how to use GeoGebra as a visualization tool for teaching and to create student-engaging interactive online materials. Free software and materials will be provided. Research indicates that despite the numerous benefits of using technology in mathematics education, the process of embedding technology in classrooms is slow and complex. Most teachers need more than just being provided with technology if the benefits of technology are to be substantially realized. It has been suggested that adequate training and collegial support boost teachers' willingness to integrate technology into their teaching and to develop successful technology-assisted teaching practices. GeoGebra is free open-source dynamic software for mathematics teaching and learning that offers geometry and algebra features in a fully connected software environment. Its pool of free interactive materials and user forum are examples of online collaboration of a world-wide community of mathematics educators. In this poster presentation, we will outline the emergence of the software GeoGebra and its recent developments as well as the first steps towards (using present tense to show that work has already been done) International GeoGebra Institute to be able to offer structured training and support for teachers who are ready to integrate GeoGebra into their classrooms. In addition, we will organize and coordinate research projects in relation to GeoGebra to enhance the development of training and support materials. While our initial plan is to establish an IGI site at Florida Atlantic University (USA), in the long run our goal is to collaborate with colleagues and set up other institutes in various locations around the world. Research suggests that despite the numerous benefits of using technology in mathematics education, the process of embedding technology in classrooms is slow and complex (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, & Peck, 2001). GeoGebra is open-source software for mathematics teaching and learning that offers geometry, algebra and calculus features in a fully connected and easy-to-use software environment. It is available free of charge and used by thousands of students and teachers around the world in classrooms and at home. In this presentation we will both present applications of GeoGebra for calculus teaching at the high school and college level, as well as raise some of the implications of free and easy-to-use software such as GeoGebra for technology integration into the teaching and learning of calculus. Eine Dynamische Geometrie Software (DGS) setzt das Handeln der Kinder in den Vordergrund. Die Schüler manipulieren ein Programm, das ihnen erlaubt Änderungen in geometrischen Figuren visuell zu erfassen und experimentell zu beeinflussen. Dieser dynamische Umgang mit den einzelnen mathematischen Objekten in einem entdeckenden Unterricht bewirkt vermutlich ein besseres Verständnis der elementaren Geometriekenntnisse bei allen Kindern. In dem DGS GeoGebra werden zusätzlich zu der grafischen Darstellung die dazugehörigen algebraischen Ausdrücke (z.B. Koordinaten, Länge, Umfang) angezeigt. Eine Änderung dieser Ausdrücke bewirkt auch eine Änderung der geometrischen Objekte und umgekehrt. Somit können die Kinder die Formeln des Umfangs und des Flächeninhalts experimentell entdecken und anschließend direkt in GeoGebra anwenden. [less ▲]

Interactive Geometry is a way to improve mathematics education with the help of a computer. Using sophisticated software, sketches and figures can be brought to life, comparable to what movies mean to images. Although many examples of helpful activities that were created using Interactive Geometry Software exist, interactive geometry software is still not used regularly in classrooms. In fact, many teachers do not know about the new possibilities, or they do not have access to the necessary resources. The EU-co-funded project Intergeo will attack the three main barriers for a EU-wide adoption of the existing material: missing search facilities, lack of interoperability, and missing quality information. Für Grundschüler gehören negative Zahlen intuitiv zum Allgemeinwissen: im Winter bringt der Wetterbericht Angaben über negative Temperaturen, Stockwerke in Tiefgaragen werden mit negativen Zahlen gekennzeichnet, usw. In diesem Vortrag wird die Idee einer systematischen Einführung in den Zahlenraum der negativen Zahlen erläutert, eine Vorgehensweise die bereits in der ersten Klasse begonnen werden kann. Nach einem ersten intuitiven Kontakt führt die Ordnungsrelation zu einer Schreibweise der negativen Zahlen und anschließend zur Beziehung zwischen der Subtraktion in N und der Addition in Z. Research suggests that, for the majority of teachers, solely providing technology is insufficient for the successful integration of technology into their teaching (Cuban, Kilpatrick and Peck 2001). It has been suggested that adequate training and collegial support increase teachers' willingness to integrate technology into their teaching and to develop successful technology-assisted teaching practices (Becker, Ravitz and Wong 1999). Our aim is to establish an International GeoGebra Institute (IGI) to be able to offer free structured training and support for teachers who are ready to integrate GeoGebra into their classrooms. In addition, we endeavour to organise and coordinate research projects in relation to GeoGebra to enhance the development of training and support materials. Whereas our initial plan is to establish an IGI site at Florida Atlantic University (USA), in the long run our goal is to collaborate with colleagues and set up other institutes in various locations around the world. Das von der EU ko-finanzierte Projekt Intergeo möchte den Gebrauch von DGS im Unterricht in ganz Europa vorantreiben. Dazu werden die 10 Projektpartner -- Pädagogische Hochschule Schwäbisch Gmünd (D), Université Montpellier II (F), Deutsches Forschungszentrum für künstliche Intelligenz (Saarbrücken,D), Cabrilog S.A.S. (Grenoble, F), Universität Bayreuth (D), Université du Luxembourg (LUX), Universidad de Cantabria (Santander, ES), TU Eindhoven (NL), Maths for More (Barcelona, ES), Jiho?eská Univerzita v ?eských Bud?jovicích (Budweis, CZ) - drei Hauptprobleme lösen: * Bereits vorhandene Inhalte werden in einer einfach zu durchsuchenden Datenbank gesammelt und mit klaren Lizenzbedingungen zur Verfügung gestellt * Es wird ein gemeinsames Dateiformat für Geometriesoftware entwickelt, so dass die Nutzung im Unterricht nicht mehr an inkompatibler Software scheitert * Konstruktionen und Aufgaben werden in Schulen getestet und die Ergebnisse werden mit in der Datenbank veröffentlicht.
