Gamification is often thought of as the end result or outcome of a project. In this paper we explore how it can also be adopted during the conceptual design stage using metaphorical games and as a method of testing concepts within a more advanced simulation environment. We explore this from the perspective of the I-GEAR project where it is used as one of many methods in the design of a commuter mobility game. [less ▲]

This paper describes how usability affects the usage of a computer-based assessment (CBA) instrument. The aim of our current study is twofold: a) the development of a usability improved CBA instrument (ISO 9241-11, 1998; ISO 9241-210, 2010) within the framework of human-computer interaction (HCI) and b) the comparison and evaluation of two concept map applications in regards to the impact that usability has on the assessment interaction. In this study we developed and evaluated two CBA concept map applications. We assessed 60 students aged between 16 and 18 who were asked to conduct concept maps on two different versions of the same knowledge assessment instrument. We observed significant differences regarding two out of three usability criteria of the ISO standard definition: efficiency and satisfaction of the students. Our findings highlight that usability influences the assessment interaction and therefore the chances of the assessment taker to work (successfully) through the assessment. [less ▲]

We study trust and context as factors influencing how people choose wireless network names. Our approach imagines the mindset of a hypothetical attacker whose goal is to ensnare unsuspecting victims into accessing dishonest WiFi access points. For this purpose, we conducted an online survey. We used two separate forms. The first form asked a random group of participants to rate a list of wireless names according to their preferences (some real and others purposely made-up) and afterwards with implied trust in mind. The second form was designed to assess the effect of context and it asked a different set of respondents to rate the same list of wireless names in relation to four different contexts. Our results provide some evidence confirming the idea that trust and context can be exploited by an attacker by purposely, or strategically, naming WiFi access points with reference to trust or within certain contexts. We suggest, in certain cases, possible defence strategies. [less ▲]

In this paper we present the DriveLab IVIS testing platform which allows for the same experiments to be conducted both under simulator and real car conditions. Other key aspects of DriveLab is that it is highly modular (therefore allowing the exchange or integration of different components) and that it supports more than one driver. For example we show that the same IVIS devices and scenario can be used with two different 3D engines. The paper provides a technical overview and a brief example of use. [less ▲]

Authenticating web identities with TLS certificates is a typical problem whose security depends on both technical and human aspects, and that needs, to be fully grasped, a socio-technical analysis. We performed such an analysis, and in this paper we comment on the tools and methodology we found appropriate. We first analysed the interaction ceremonies between users and the most used browsers in the market. Then we looked at user's understanding of those interactions. Our tools and our methodology depend on whether the user model has a non-deterministic or a realistic behaviour. We successfully applied formal methods in the first case. In the second, we had to define a security framework consistent with research methods of experimental cognitive science. [less ▲]

In order to study how the notion of User Experience (UX) evolved over the last few years, an international survey originally conducted in 2008 by Law et al. [1] has been replicated. Its main goal was to get some insights on the points of view from practitioners on the notion of UX. After having slightly adapted the initial (English) survey and having translated it into French and German, more than 758 valid answers have been collected from all over the world. This experience report aims at illustrating some of the challenges involved in the replication of such a study as well as successes and limitations. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

In this paper we present a novel concept that deals specifically with changing driver behaviour in order to reduce traffic congestion. The project I-GEAR (incentives and gaming environments for automobile routing) aims to understand the motivations that drivers have while undertaking the daily commute and then to provide them with a range of incentives to change their behaviour. A key focus within the project is on ways in which the problem could potentially be solved without recourse to an expensive infrastructure project. Our solution to this problem was to move the problem of traffic management onto everyday mobile devices. In the following paper we outline the background to the problem, concepts relating to pervasive gaming, existing explorations of incentives and gaming approaches as well as our basic concept and project methodology. In this paper we provide an overview of the I-GEAR (incentives and gaming environments for automobile routing) project that is intended to reduce traffic congestion in Luxembourg through the use of persuasive gaming. The following paper presents a review of the ethical, privacy and trust aspects relating to pervasive gaming in particular within the domain of traffic congestion. The paper deals explicitly with the challenges involved that fall between the gaps standard ethical practice and scientific research when studies comprise of those in the lab (where collection and use is heavily controlled) and those which take place in the wild where there is the requirement to share data possibly with external parties. Also where the nature of such work is at the borders of the concept of traditional study and a commercial running prototype. [less ▲]
