[more ▼] With this article we want to illustrate how the central publications of the European Union legitimate a role of Career Guidance Services (CGS) that help in establishing a desired form of social order. Using the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse, we reconstructed four typical metaphorical conceptualisations of CGS that go along with desirable and taken-for-granted subject positions. The results reveal the assigned active role of CGS in establishing a specific vision of and in transforming the European society. We conclude by outlining the ways in which critique is expressed within the discourse and by highlighting the inherent ambivalences of these practices of critique. [more ▼] Based on biographic and qualitative network interviews with first- generation migrants from Portugal, Italy, and Germany, aged now 65 years and older, we reconstruct their preferences for later dependency on long-term care in old age (‘hands-on’ care). We regard the interviewees’ assessment of their situation as ways of achieving agency by taking into consideration the formal and informal options for care. Our results show that older adults’ care preferences are influenced by aspects associated with old age that are not specific for older migrants, and at the same time, by aspects that are strongly connected to the fact of being a migrant such as language, culture, and transnational orientation. We find a clear preference for paid care work. Challenges or even barriers in regards to care homes are related to language and culture, which lead to an anticipation of marginalisation and social isolation inside these institutions. Furthermore, it becomes evident that the different contexts of migration strongly correspond with class- specific social positioning. [more ▼] This paper is based on biographical and qualitative egocentric network analyses and examines the social relations of older Italian and Portuguese migrants in need of long-term care (LTC) in Luxembourg. It addresses three components of their everyday social relationships, including the relationships with emotionally close individuals in their egocentric networks, with careworkers, and with other care-recipients in institutional settings. The findings support two main theses: First, careworkers are central figures in providing emotional support to older migrants; second, the relations with other care-recipients can be difficult to establish in contexts of migration, which leads to the necessity of arranging new forms of institutional settings in order to decrease social isolation, being a pressing aspect to public health policies. [more ▼] Population ageing and the globalisation of international migration are challenging the research agendas of social scientists around the world, and posing numerous challenges for policy makers and practitioners whose goal is to formulate and design high-quality and user-friendly policies and services. Both of these phenomena have brought, for example, attention to the fact that more and more people around the world are ageing in countries other than those where they were born. The fact that elderly care sectors around the world need to recruit staff if they are to handle the growing number of older people that will need their services is also something that has been discussed when population ageing and the globalisation of international migration have been debated. The elderly care sector’s reliance on people with migrant backgrounds has namely increased as a result of these phenomena. This collection is therefore situated at the intersection of ageing and migration studies and takes into account the various issues with which this intersection is concerned. The chapters in this volume are written by established researchers in the field of ageing and migration around the world. The collection explores these issues in three sections: Elderly care regimes and migration regimes: national perspectives Ageing in contexts of migration: a multifaceted phenomenon Elderly care and migration. The expert contributions in this volume address the array of issues associated with the study of ageing, old age and elderly care in contexts of migration.
