We study the problem of computing a minimal subset of nodes of a given asynchronous Boolean network that need to be perturbed in a single-step to drive its dynamics from an initial state to a target steady state (or attractor), which we call the source-target control of Boolean networks. Due to the phenomenon of state-space explosion, a simple global approach that performs computations on the entire network, may not scale well for large networks. We believe that efficient algorithms for such networks must exploit the structure of the networks together with their dynamics. Taking this view, we derive a decomposition-based solution to the minimal source-target control problem which can be significantly faster than the existing approaches on large networks. We then show that the solution can be further optimised if we take into account appropriate information about the source state. We apply our solutions to both real-life biological networks and randomly generated networks, demonstrating the efficiency and efficacy of our approach. [less ▲]

Malware is one of the most popular cyber-attack methods in the digital world. According to the independent test company AV-TEST, 350,000 new malware samples are created every day. To analyze all samples by hand to discover whether they are malware does not scale, so antivirus companies automate the process e.g., using sand- boxes where samples can be run, observed, and classified. Malware authors are aware of this fact, and try to evade detection. In this paper we describe one of such evasion technique: unprecedented, we discovered it while analyzing a ransomware sample. Analyzed in a Cuckoo Sandbox, the sample was able to avoid triggering malware indicators, thus scoring significantly below the minimum severity level. Here, we discuss what strategy the sample follows to evade the analysis, proposing practical defense methods to nullify, in our turn, the sample’s furtive strategy. [less ▲]

Several researchers studied dry-stacked masonry walls (DSM) and inferred that the actual contact surface between the different block rows and the compressive strength in such walls are reduced by bed-joint imperfections as well as by height differences between different masonry blocks leading both to high stress concentration. This paper concentrates on the first type on imperfections. Through experimental tests, it analyses the influence of bed-joint roughness on the load bearing capacity and investigates a strategy to improve the load-bearing capacity of DSM by placing an additional horizontal layer on the top face of raw masonry blocks. First, different contact layers using conventional and auxetic materials were applied. Then 20 dry-stacked masonry prisms built with raw and improved masonry blocks were tested under axial compressive load until failure. Prescale Fujifilm strips were used to measure the actual contact in the bed-joints. Experimental tests show that the use of a contact layer with well-defined material properties enables firstly to increase the actual contact area in the bed-joints from 23% to 98% of the nominal contact area and secondly to increase the load-bearing capacity by 14 to 97%. In addition, the contact layer with an auxetic material shows a significant capacity in altering the lateral expansion in the block units. The outcomes show that although the bed joint roughness influences the stress distribution in a dry-stacked masonry block, a contact layer with well-defined material properties enables to overcome the roughness induced by the bed-joint imperfections. Parkinson’s disease (PD) exhibits systemic effects on human metabolism with emerging roles for the gut microbiome. Here, we integrated longitudinal metabolome data from 30 drug-naïve, de-novo PD patients and 30 matched controls with constraint-based modeling of gut microbial communities derived from an independent, drug-naïve PD cohort, and prospective data from a general population. Our key results are i) longitudinal trajectory of metabolites associated with the interconversion of methionine and cysteine via cystathionine differed between PD patients and controls, ii) dopaminergic medication showed strong lipidomic signatures, iii) taurine-conjugated bile acids correlated with the severity of motor symptoms, while low levels of sulfated taurolithocholate were associated with incident PD in the general population, and iv) computational modeling predicted changes in sulfur metabolism, driven by A. muciniphila and B. wadsworthia, consistent with the changed metabolome. In conclusion, the multi-omics integration revealed PD-specific patterns in microbial-host sulfur co-metabolism that may contribute to PD severity. [less ▲]

There is substantial clinical and public health evidence that video gaming, particularly online gaming, can become excessive and lead to psychological distress and functional impairment. This has led to the inclusion of gaming disorder as an official mental condition in the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Edition (ICD-11; World Health Organization, 2019). Psychological models recognize the importance of cognitive factors to explain the initiation, development, and maintenance of problematic gaming behaviors. This chapter will summarize some of the known cognitive factors associated with problem gaming and gaming disorder. These cognitions will be divided into two broad categories: (1) cognitive deficits (e.g., impaired executive functioning, hazardous decision-making, or deliberative processes) and (2) cognitive biases (e.g., attentional biases, cognitive distortions, dysfunctional cognitions). This chapter will review and synthesize available research findings and highlight their clinical implications for gaming disorder. The limitations of the research base are considered and some potential avenues for future research are proposed. [less ▲]

We study the geometry of the foliation by constant Gaussian curvature surfaces (S_k)_k of a hyperbolic end, and how it relates to the structures of its boundary at infinity and of its pleated boundary. First, we show that the Thurston and the Schwarzian parametrizations are the limits of two families of parametrizations of the space of hyperbolic ends, defined by Labourie in 1992 in terms of the geometry of the leaves S_k. We give a new description of the renormalized volume using the constant curvature foliation. We prove a generalization of McMullen's Kleinian reciprocity theorem, which replaces the role of the Schwarzian parametrization with Labourie's parametrizations. Finally, we describe the constant curvature foliation of a hyperbolic end as the integral curve of a time-dependent Hamiltonian vector field on the cotangent space to Teichmüller space, in analogy to the Moncrief flow for constant mean curvature foliations in Lorenzian space-times. The railway sector has been a source of inspiration for generations of researchers challenged to develop models and tools to analyze safety and reliability. Threats were coming mainly from within, due to occasionally faults in hardware components. With the advent of smart trains, the railway industry is venturing into cybersecurity and the railway sector will become more and more compelled to protect assets from threats against information & communication technology. We discuss this revolution at large, while speculating that instruments developed for security requirements engineering can then come in support of in the railway sector. And we explore the use of one of them: the Controlled Natural Language for Data Sharing Agreement (CNL4DSA). We use it to formalize a few exemplifying signal management system requirements. Since CNL4DSA enables the automatic generation of enforceable access control policies, our exercise is preparatory to implementing the security-by design principle in railway signalling management engineering. The molecular study of fat cell development in the human body is essential for our understanding of obesity and related diseases. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSC) are the ideal source to study fat formation as they are the progenitors of adipocytes. In this work, we used human MSCs, received from surgery waste, and differentiated them into fat adipocytes. The combination of several layers of information coming from lipidomics, metabolomics and proteomics enabled network analysis of the biochemical pathways in adipogenesis. Simultaneous analysis of metabolites, lipids, and proteins in cell culture is challenging due to the compound’s chemical difference, so most studies involve separate analysis with unimolecular strategies. In this study, we employed a multimolecular approach using a two–phase extraction to monitor the crosstalk between lipid metabolism and protein-based signaling in a single sample (~105 cells). We developed an innovative analytical workflow including standardization with in-house produced 13C isotopically labeled compounds, hyphenated high-end mass spectrometry (high-resolution Orbitrap MS), and chromatography (HILIC, RP) for simultaneous untargeted screening and targeted quantification. Metabolite and lipid concentrations ranged over three to four orders of magnitude and were detected down to the low fmol (absolute on column) level. Biological validation and data interpretation of the multiomics workflow was performed based on proteomics network reconstruction, metabolic modelling (MetaboAnalyst 4.0), and pathway analysis (OmicsNet). Comparing MSCs and adipocytes, we observed significant regulation of different metabolites and lipids such as triglycerides, gangliosides, and carnitine with 113 fully reprogrammed pathways. The observed changes are in accordance with literature findings dealing with adipogenic differentiation of MSC. These results are a proof of principle for the power of multimolecular extraction combined with orthogonal LC-MS assays and network construction. Considering the analytical and biological validation performed in this study, we conclude that the proposed multiomics workflow is ideally suited for comprehensive follow-up studies on adipogenesis and is fit for purpose for different applications with a high potential to understand the complex pathophysiology of diseases. In this work, we develop a new framework to directly simulate super-quadric (SQ) particles in fluid flows based on a forcing fictitious domain method. Specifically, a super-quadric particle function is used to represent the particle shape of different types in a flexible manner. The immersion of particles in the fluid is handled by imposing rigid solid body motion in the particle domain, as well as adding a local forcing term to the Navier-Stokes equations by calculating the integral of both the pressure gradient and the particle velocity over the whole particle domain. Particle shapes are varied by changing the five super-quadric parameters of the SQ equation. We validate our approach by performing simulations of flow around a fixed particle and sedimentation of a particle in a channel in 2D and 3D. The validation results indicate that the current simulation results show a good agreement with experimental data. Moreover, our method is used to study the flow around fixed non-spherical particles with different orientations and particle Reynolds numbers. The particle Reynolds numbers vary from 0.1 to 3000. The super-quadric particles exemplarily considered in the current study are an ellipsoidal particle and fibre-like particles. We present the results for drag and lift coefficients at different particle orientations and different particle Reynolds numbers. The obtained results lay the foundation to apply the framework to flown through multi-particle systems in the near future. [less ▲]

Satellite Precoding is a promising technique to meet the target data rates of the future high throughput satellite systems and the costs per bit as required by 5G applications and networks, but it requires strict synchronization among the transmitted waveforms, in addition to accurate channel state information. Most of the published work about this topic consider ideal oscillators, but in practice, the output of an oscillator is not a single spectral line at the nominal frequency. This paper proposes a model for the oscillator phase noise and analyzes the resulting received signal to interference plus noise ratio (SNIR) in a satellite communication system using Precoding. Simulations of a communication satellite system with a two-beam transponder and two receivers were performed to compute the effective SNIR. This work uses a simulator which also considers practical impairments such as time misalignment, errors in the channel state information, interference, thermal noise and phase noise masks for satellite oscillators. The Precoding methods used for the analysis are Zero Forcing (ZF) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE). The obtained results prove that there is a degradation in the performance due to the use of independent oscillators but this effect is compensated by the precoding matrix. [less ▲]

In web opening regions, a significant share of the global shear force is redistributed from the perforated web of the steel beam to the reinforced concrete (RC) slab. This redistribution leads to vertical forces in the shear connectors close to both edges of the opening and influences the internal forces in the steel beam and the RC slab over a length of approximately three times the opening length a0. The global shear failure in the web opening region is affected by the rather brittle behavior of the concrete and is either characterized by a diagonal shear cracking failure of the RC slab, or a local bending failure at the opening edges, or vertical connector failure (concrete break-out) at the ends of the opening. This paper is intended to clarify the structural behavior of web opening regions and proposes easy-to-use models that make it possible to analyze the local internal forces of each partial beam in a mechanically consistent manner. Based on these models, a novel design procedure is presented, that allows efficient design and dimensioning of web openings as well as prediction of shear resistance and failure mode. [less ▲]
