This dissertation provides research on alienation from learning in differential learning and developmental milieus (vgl. Baumert/Stanat/Watermann 2006) within the strongly stratified educational system of Luxembourg. Alienation from learning is defined as a student´s generalised negative orientation towards learning (Hascher/Hadjar 2018, S. 179) and collocates with severe consequences including school dropout (see Hascher/Hagenauer 2010, S. 220). The study focusses on the question of how the development of alienation from learning differs between the differential learning and developmental milieus within Luxembourgish secondary school tracks. The conceptual framework is based on the perspective of differential learning and developmental milieus (Baumert/Stanat/Watermann 2006), the theory of school culture (Helsper 2008; Kramer/Thiersch/Ziems 2015) and further culture sociological and resonance pedagogical approaches (Willis 1978; Beljan 2017). Combining research on school culture and research on school alienation, this works examines the interplay between school culture and individual students and its impact on alienation from learning. Conceptualized as a mixed method study, this research aims for a holistic picture on alienation from learning by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative part is based on a three-year panel study with students from all secondary school tracks (grade 7-9). Employing random effects models and growth curves models it investigated the degree and development of alienation from learning over time. Qualitative group discussions and interviews with classes (grade 7) and their teachers from the high-achieving and low-achieving school track (corresponding to grammar school and the lowest secondary school track) were conducted to research how schools´ specific demands contribute to alienation from learning. The method employed in the qualitative analysis was the sequence-analytical habitus reconstruction approach. Quantitative analysis reveals a moderate but increasing degree of alienation from learning in all secondary school tracks from grade 7 to 9. Therefore, alienation from learning develops similarly in all secondary school tracks. Students from the high-achieving ES-Track show the strongest degree of alienation from learning whereas students from the low-achieving Modulaire-Track show the lowest degree of alienation from learning. Qualitative analysis identifies the high-achieving and low-achieving secondary school tracks as differential learning and developmental milieus characterized by diverging educational demands and standards on the class level. Consequently, when students’ orientations conflict with the school´s demands and offers there is a high risk for them to develop alienation. Track-specific possibilities and risks were identified with regard to bonding and alienation. Strong achievement orientation, theoretical educational content and highly standardised educational settings may foster alienation from learning depending on the students´ individual competencies and orientations. The internal/external (I/E) frame of reference model postulates that achievement influences the formation of academic self-concept (ASC) via social and dimensional comparison processes. Its recent extension as the generalized I/E model allows further domains than math and verbal achievement. However, intelligence facets as an indicator of achievement have been neglected within the GI/E model framework. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the influences of three intelligence facets (verbal, numerical, figural) on domain-specific ASCs beyond grades and achievement scores. We drew on N=382 German students to analyze verbal, numerical, and figural intelligence, German and math achievement, self-reported grades and ASCs in four domains. We performed a structural equation model using Mplus with grades, achievement scores and intelligence facets specified as predictors and domain-specific ASCs as criteria. Positive paths were found from math, physics, German and English grade to their corresponding self-concepts. A positive path was found between physics grade and math ASC while negative paths were found from English grade to math and physics ASC and from math grade to German, physics and English ASC. The path coefficients from math achievement to math ASC as well as to physics ASC were positive; German achievement was negatively related to math ASC. Lastly, numerical intelligence was positively related to physics ASC, and verbal intelligence was positively related to English ASC. Thus, intelligence, specifically numerical and verbal intelligence, seem to be valid predictors of domain-specific ACSs beyond grades and achievement test scores. [less ▲]

Music historiography is multifaceted. The historiography of music in Luxembourg is divided into various aspects. Firstly, it is part of regional music research in Europe and, as far as Luxembourg is concerned, national music research. A first point of view is music ethnology: citizens, nations have their songs and pass them on orally across national and linguistic borders and over generations. Folksongs originate from the music of the people, and patriotic music in Luxembourg is often music based on folksong styles. A further aspect of music in Luxembourg is that art music originated since the independence of the Grand Duchy in the 19th century. Sociological considerations deal with community music in Luxembourg. The starting point is a more liberal constitution, which for the first time offered citizens the right of assembly. Finally, my lecture will offer some insights of musical activities of people who left their homeland. [less ▲]

Let G be a connected, reductive, complex affine algebraic group, and let Xr denote the moduli space of G-valued representations of a rank r free group. We first characterize the singularities in Xr resolving conjectures of Florentino-Lawton. In particular, we compute the codimension of the orbifold singular locus using facts about Borel-de Siebenthal groups. We then use this codimension to calculate some higher homotopy groups of the smooth locus of Xr, proving conjectures of Florentino-Lawton-Ramras. Lastly, using the earlier analysis of Borel-de Siebenthal groups, we prove a conjecture of Sikora about CI Lie groups. [less ▲]

Value-added (VA) modeling can be used to quantify teacher and school effectiveness by estimating the effect of pedagogical actions on students’ achievement. It is gaining increasing importance in educational evaluation, teacher accountability, and high-stakes decisions. We analyzed 370 empirical studies on VA modeling, focusing on modeling and methodological issues to identify key factors for improvement. The studies stemmed from 26 countries (68% from the USA). Most studies applied linear regression or multilevel models. Most studies (i.e., 85%) included prior achievement as a covariate, but only 2% included noncognitive predictors of achievement (e.g., personality or affective student variables). Fifty-five percent of the studies did not apply statistical adjustments (e.g., shrinkage) to increase precision in effectiveness estimates, and 88% included no model diagnostics. We conclude that research on VA modeling can be significantly enhanced regarding the inclusion of covariates, model adjustment and diagnostics, and the clarity and transparency of reporting. It is challenging to estimate genetic variant burden across different subtypes of epilepsy. Herein, we used a comparative approach to assess the diagnostic yield and genotype-phenotype correlations in the four most common brain lesions in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. Targeted sequencing analysis was performed for a panel of 161 genes with a mean coverage of > 400x. Lesional tissue was histopathologically reviewed and dissected from hippocampal sclerosis (n=15), ganglioglioma (n=16), dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (n=8) and ocal cortical dysplasia type II (n=15). Peripheral blood (n=12) or surgical tissue samples histopathologically classified as lesion-free (n=42) were available for comparison. Variants were classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic according to American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines. Overall, we identified pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants in 25.9% of patients with a mean coverage of 383x. The highest number of pathogenic/ likely pathogenic variants was observed in patients with ganglioglioma (43.75%; all somatic) and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (37.5%; all somatic), and in 20% of cases with focal cortical dysplasia type II (13.33% somatic, 6.67% germline). Pathogenic/likely pathogenic positive genes were disorder-specific and BRAF V600E the only recurrent pathogenic variant. This study represents a reference for diagnostic yield across the four most common lesion entities in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. The observed large variability in variant burden by epileptic lesion type calls for whole exome sequencing of histopathologically well characterized tissue in a diagnostic setting and in research to discover novel disease-associated genes. South Georgia Island, the main land outcrop on the South Georgia microcontinent (SGM), is located approximately 1,400 km east of the Falkland Islands and approximately 1,400 km northeast of the northernmost tip of the Antarctic peninsular. The SGM is believed to lie south of the North Scotia Ridge (NSR), which forms the boundary to the South America Plate, while to the south it is bordered by the Scotia Plate (SP). In its sub-Antarctic location, the island is largely covered by mountain glaciers which have been reported to be retreating due to climatic change. Furthermore, during past glaciation periods the island and its shelf area, stretching much of the SGM, have been ice covered as was revealed by scarring of the sub-oceanic topography. Together with ongoing tectonics along the NSR and recent seismicity at the SP boundary, these processes have the ability to produce significant uplift on local to regional scales. With its mid-ocean location in the Southern Atlantic Ocean South Georgia Island is in a key position for the oceanic and geodetic global monitoring networks. As these net-works suffer from a Hemisphere imbalance with the number of stations in the Northern Hemisphere outnumbering those in the Southern Hemisphere, operating these stations to the highest standards is of key scientific value. It is of particular interest to monitor the tide gauge (GLOSS ID 187) at King Edward Point (KEP) for vertical land movements to establish a continuous record of its datum within the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL), which in turn makes it useful for long-term sea level studies and satellite altimetry calibrations. With the establishment of five GNSS stations on the islands by teams from Luxembourg, the UK and the USA during 2013 to 2015, and the scientific analysis of these data within a global network of stations, it has now become possible to study present-day vertical land movements and their impacts. Furthermore, together with four precise levelling campaigns of the KEP benchmark network in 2013, 2014 and two in 2017, it has also been possible to investigate the very local character of the vertical motions near KEP, i.e. the stability of the jetty upon which the tide gauge is mounted. In this study, we will present the still preliminary results from the GNSS and levelling measurements and will discuss their impact on the sea level record from the KEP tide gauge. Our measurements show that while South Georgia Island and the area around KEP are rising, the jetty and tide gauge are subsiding, leading to a lower magnitude of the observed sea level change than expected from satellite altimetry. In order to improve the agreement between these measurements both local and regional vertical land movements need to be monitored. [less ▲]

This work proposes the use of data-selective semi-blind schemes in order to decrease the amount of data used to train the adaptive filters that employ Volterra series, while reducing its computational complexity. It is also proposed a data-selective technique that exploits the structure of Volterra series, employing a different filter for each of its kernels. The parameter vector of these filters grows as the order of the kernel increases. Therefore, by assigning larger error thresholds to higher-order filters, it is possible to decrease their update rates, thus reducing the overall computational complexity. Results in an equalization setup indicate that both proposals are capable of achieving promising results in terms of mean square error and bit error rate at low computational complexity, and in the case of semi-blind algorithms, using much less training data. At the technical level, the goal of Interledger is to provide an architecture and a minimal set of protocols to enable interoperability for any value transfer system. The Interledger protocol is literally a protocol for interledger payments. To understand how is it possible to achieve this goal, several aspects of the technology require a deeper analysis. For this reason, in our journey to become knowledgeable and active contributor we decided to create our own test-bed on our premises. By doing so, we noticed that some aspects are well documented but we found that others might need more attention and clarification. Despite a large community effort, the task to keep information on a fast evolving software ecosystem is tedious and not always the priority for such a project. Therefore, the purpose of this document is to guide, through several hands-on activities, community members who want to engage at different levels. The document consolidates all the relevant information from generating a simple payment to ultimately create a test-bed with the Interledger protocol suite between Ripple and other distributed ledger technology.
