Public-Key Infrastructure (PKI) is the cornerstone technology that facilitates secure information exchange over the Internet. However, PKI is exposed to risks due to potential failures of Certificate Authorities (CAs) that may be used to issue unauthorized certificates for end-users. Many recent breaches show that if a CA is compromised, the security of the corresponding end-users will be in risk. As an emerging solution, Blockchain technology potentially resolves the problems of traditional PKI systems - in particular, elimination of single point-of-failure and rapid reaction to CAs shortcomings. Blockchain has the ability to store and manage digital certificates within a public and immutable ledger, resulting in a fully traceable history log. In this paper we designed and developed a blockchain-based PKI management framework for issuing, validating and revoking X.509 certificates. Evaluation and experimental results confirm that the proposed framework provides more reliable and robust PKI systems with modest maintenance costs. [less ▲]

In a so-called “Post-truth” era, the role of facts in society has become ever more ambiguous and contentious. Increasingly, facts are simultaneously used as a tool for risk assessment and risk management on the one hand, and an instrument of politicking and social polarisation on the other. That facts are subjective artefacts is not new. Pioneering sociologists like Emile Durkheim (Durkheim, 1996), Michel Foucault (Foucault, 2008, Burchell et al., 1991), and the Frankfurt School (Nicholas, 2012) (to name a few), have ruminated over the subjectivities of knowledge more than a century ago. But the difference in our current modern, hyper-globalised world is that the subjective nature of facts are increasingly both the best tool we have to deal with global risk, and a prime source of global risk at the same time. The question this raises, is how to deal with this paradox in policy? And is cooperation possible without consensus on whose facts are more true? [less ▲]

Simulating thin structures implies solving non-linear partial differential equations defined on manifolds, which can include higher-order derivatives and/or stiff terms. Implementing effective locking-free discretisation techniques for nonlinear plates and shells is a challenging and highly technical task. We present FEniCS-Shells, an open-source library for simulating thin structures using the finite element method, based on the FEniCS Project. Leveraging the high-level symbolic capabilities of the Unified Form Language (UFL) and the automatic code generation facilities of the FENICS Form Compiler (FFC), FEniCS-Shells allows for the concise formulation of discretisations of various thin-structural theories, including linear and nonlinear geometrically exact Naghdi shell models, the Marguerre-von Kármán shallow shell model, and the Reissner-Mindlin plate model. Mixed Interpolation of Tensorial Component (MITC) and Partial Selective Reduced Integration (PSRI) numerical methods are used to alleviate shear- and membrane-locking issues. The effectiveness of these approaches and the ease of writing solvers for non-linear shell models is illustrated through a large set of verification tests and demo codes. FEniCS-Shells can run without modification on high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. [less ▲]

Interference greatly affects the quality of service of wireless and satellite communications, having also a financial impact for the telecommunication operators. Therefore, as the interfering events increase due to the deployment of new services, there is an increasing demand for the detection and mitigation of interference. There are several interference detectors in the literature, evaluated by using extensive simulations. However, this paper goes one step further, designing, implementing and evaluating the performance of the developed interference detection algorithms experimentally using a software defined radio, and particularly the universal software radio peripheral platform. A realistic communication system is implemented, consisting of a transmitter, a channel emulator and a receiver. Based on this system, we implement all the appropriate communications features such as pulse shaping, synchronization and demodulation. The real-time system implementation is validated and evaluated through signal and interference detection. We observe that the interference detection threshold is critical to the functioning of the system. Several existing interference detection techniques fail in practice due to this fact. In this paper, we propose a robust and practically implementable method the selection of threshold. Finally, we present real-time experimental results for the probabilities of false alarm and detection in order to verify the accuracy of our study and reinforce our theoretical analysis. [less ▲]

In this work, a numerical approach to study erosion phenomena inside a focusing tube for Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) is presented. The goal of this approach is to capture the erosive action of the particle-laden flow developing inside the focusing tube as a result of cumulated impact phenomena. This is fundamental in the research and development of this sector in order to optimize cost and reliability of the AWJ system. With this purpose, a multiscale algorithm for CFD-DEM is used in combination with erosion models presented in the literature so to retrieve erosion profiles comparable to the one obtained by the most common experiments in this field. The approach is shown to provide insight into the process of wear development as the identification of areas characterized by brittle and cut phenomena. Preliminary parametric studies on the influence of impact models and particle diameters are proposed to show the potentialities of the method in describing the physics of the nozzle. [less ▲]

Advances in machine learning techniques in recent years were of great benefit for the detection of diseases/medical conditions in eHealth systems, but only to a limited extend. In fact, while for the detection of some diseases the data mining techniques were performing very well, they still got outperformed by medical experts in about half of the tests done. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach, which will use a rule-based system on top of the machine learning techniques in order to optimise the results of conflict handling. The goal is to insert the knowledge from medical experts in order to optimise the results given by the classification techniques. Possible positive and negative effects will be discussed. [less ▲]

“What can be added to the happiness of a man who is in health, out of debt, and has a clear conscience?” pondered Adam Smith in the 18th century. When applied to the financial situation of states rather than to individuals, the observation is just as relevant. David Hume saw restoring public finances as a question of survival for the nation: “Either the nation must destroy public credit, or public credit will destroy the nation.” This view is undoubtedly an exaggeration: it reflects a traditional approach to economics in which debt is merely a liability and not the reflection of assets – such as a welfare system and public infrastructures – passed on to future generations. Such a view underestimates the fact that debt, like taxes, contributes to the funding of public services, and in so doing – as emphasised by US historian James Macdonald – it plays a part in the development of democratic regimes... This paper is premised on the notion that actors play a central role in shaping their institutional contexts. The paper adds to scholarship in this area by bringing together three disparate cases with a common analytical entry point: the city region. Despite their multiple scales and different sites of governance, these cases are united by a common theme, exemplified in each city region: addressing the contradictions of rapid development, in particular rapid growth and competitiveness. Using the conceptual framework of interpretive institutionalism, we examine how dilemmas, in this case the pressure of rapid growth in regions, are informed by the different traditions for understanding the role of the market in delivering project outcomes. Our findings show this difference in institutional norms and the variance among the different paradigms. [less ▲]
