People usually are aware of the privacy risks of publish-ing photos online, but these risks are less evident when sharing humangenomes. Modern photos and sequenced genomes are both digital rep-resentations of real lives. They contain private information that maycompromise people’s privacy, and still, their highest value is most oftimes achieved only when sharing them with others. In this work, wepresent an analogy between the privacy aspects of sharing photos andsharing genomes, which clarifies the privacy risks in the latter to thegeneral public. Additionally, we illustrate an alternative informed modelto share genomic data according to the privacy-sensitivity level of eachportion. This article is a call to arms for a collaborative work between ge-neticists and security experts to build more effective methods to system-atically protect privacy, whilst promoting the accessibility and sharingof genomes [less ▲]

Thanks to the rapid advances in sequencing technologies, genomic data is now being produced at an unprecedented rate. To adapt to this growth, several algorithms and paradigm shifts have been proposed to increase the throughput of the classical DNA workflow, e.g. by relying on the cloud to perform CPU intensive operations. However, the scientific community raised an alarm due to the possible privacy-related attacks that can be executed on genomic data. In this paper we review the state of the art in cloud-based alignment algorithms that have been developed for performance. We then present several privacy-preserving mechanisms that have been, or could be, used to align reads at an incremental performance cost. We finally argue for the use of risk analysis throughout the DNA workflow, to strike a balance between performance and protection of data. [less ▲]

The aim of the present communication is to share the main findings of a collaborative research project developed in 2013-2014 between a high school and the University in Luxembourg. Collective multilingualism and individual plurilingualism, defined as multiplurilingualism by Ehrhart (2010: 221), form the linguistic environment of Luxembourg. Luxembourg, a small country in Europe with a high rate of immigration (46, 7%, STATEC, 2016), has three languages (Luxembourgish, French and German) and a trilingual education system. Fluency in the three languages is considered to be essential to facilitate social cohesion and professional success (OECD, 2006: 1010), and language teaching occupies a central position in the education system. Nevertheless, language learning programmes are quite inflexible and very compartmentalized (García, 2009; Gretsch, 2014). The multiplurilingual situation of the country challenges the traditional view of language and requests teachers to adapt their practices to the new circumstances. One option for secondary schools to address this linguistic diversity are the classes d’insertion, an innovative setting developed by the Ministry of Education, where recently arrived adolescent students are ofered an educational track by means of a full-immersion program in a second language (French, German or English).. Considering the teacher as a mediator and grounded in sociocultural theory combined with an ecolinguistic approach, the present study observes and describes the way that two teachers of these classes d’ insertion were teaching classes in French to newcomer students (aged 11-12);. By means of classroom-observation, audio-recording, field notes and photos we tried to understand what was happening in class during one academic year. Through three semi-structured interviews conducted with the teachers, we gathered information about their thoughts concerning their practices. The research data show the impact of the teachers’ beliefs on their classroom practices and pedagogical decisions. However, their representations do not fully correspond with the real practices observed in class. In order to make those two ends meet, are planning to extend the reflection on an international level, in an action-research-project with teachers developing their talent as researchers and reflecting about their practices in order to propose new pedagogies and approaches to teacher education in multicultural contexts. In this contribution, I will present examples of common practice to overcome barriers, bridge boundaries and deconstruct borders at the workplace; these are centripetal or democratizing forces as they try to reduce the distance between people of different origins by creating inclusive spaces. My contribution to a comparative perspective comes from the field of ecolinguistics, a rather new discipline which tries to combine various interdisciplinary approaches in the field of communication, especially in complex environments, with a high diversity of linguistic systems [less ▲]

During the last years, small lightweight and low cost remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS) commonly referred as Drones have rapidly developed into capable low-cost Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Fuelled by a vibrant community of scientists, professionals and hobby enthusiasts enabling technologies have matured quickly, and prices of consumer grade as well as semi-professional systems fell sharply. Especially multirotor vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAS have proven to be versatile and flexible platforms which can be equipped with a range of sensors capable of capturing aerial data for a variety of 2D and 3D mapping applications. Consumer grade, low weight systems as the DJI Phantom or 3DR Solo have a limited payload and can carry low weight action cameras like the GoPro Hero models which are capable of collecting video as well as still RGB and near-infrared imagery. Applying traditional Photogrammetric methods to imagery from low-cost UAS systems proved complex and impractical in the past. However modern the state-of-the-art structure from motion algorithms implemented in off the shelf software packages (sometimes referred as new Photogrammetry), cloud processing environments and available via open source libraries promise to generate dense 3D point clouds, textured models and orthomosaics in high quality and without much effort. How accurate and how reliable are data products generated from such systems? Expanding from a preliminary study (BACKES & TEASDALE 2015) we review the every progressing capabilities and features of COTS (commercial of the shelf) user and semi-professional UAS systems under the aspects of deployable sensors, ease of use, reliability as well as safety. We show the workflow from flight planning, data collection to dense pointclould matching using a range of software products. The resulting point clouds are evaluated and benchmarked using a highly accurate and dense reference data acquired via geodetic terrestrial survey and Laserscanning. The results of this evaluations allow conclusions on the current accuracy capabilities of this such low-cost systems. [less ▲]
