Vor dem Hintergrund einer sich am Übergang zum Rentenalter befindlichen ersten Generation von Migranten gewinnen Fragen zur intergenerationellen Solidarität in Familien mit Migrationshintergrund zunehmend an Bedeutung. Ein Verbleiben im Aufnahmeland könnte im Einklang mit kulturspezifischen Werthaltungen mit besonderen Erwartungen an die erwachsenen Kinder einhergehen. Die vorliegende Studie befasst sich ausgehend von Bengtson’s Solidaritätsmodell mit der Frage, wie sich die intergenerationelle Solidarität im Migrationskontext ausgestaltet, insbesondere welche gegenseitigen Erwartungen Eltern und erwachsene Kinder haben und wie der gegenseitige Austausch reguliert wird. Im Rahmen der vom FNR geförderten IRMA-Studie wurden mittels eines standardisierten Fragebogens Daten zur Familienkohäsion, zu gegenseitigen Erwartungen bezüglich Unterstützung und familienbezogenen Werthaltungen sowie zur filialen Angst und zum subjektiven Wohlbefinden an n = 67 in Luxemburg lebenden portugiesischen sowie n = 87 luxemburgischen Familien (Vater, Mutter und jeweils ein erwachsenes Kind) erhoben. Während luxemburgische und portugiesische Familien eine ähnlich hohe Familienkohäsion aufwiesen, zeigten sich Unterschiede in der Ausgestaltung des gegenseitigen Austauschs. Portugiesische Teilnehmer berichteten höhere Erwartungen bezüglich Kontakthäufigkeit und Unterstützung, wohingegen der Zusammenhalt luxemburgischer Familien eher durch eine generelle Verfügbarkeit bei Bedarf gekennzeichnet war. Es zeigte sich kein Mittelwertsunterschied der portugiesischen und luxemburgischen erwachsenen Kinder bezüglich filialer Angst. Während allerdings ein starker wahrgenommener Familienzusammenhalt mit geringerer filialer Angst in beiden Gruppen einherging, war ein stärkeres Bedürfnis nach Unabhängigkeit aber insbesondere bei den portugiesischen Kindern mit höherer filialer Angst verbunden. Die Ergebnisse werden unter Berücksichtigung intrafamilialer Prozesse der Beziehungsregulation im Rahmen eines integrativen Modells von Familienbeziehungen im Kontext von Altern und Migration diskutiert. Wie können ansässige und neu zugezogene Schülerinnen und Schülern in Rheinland-Pfalz und Luxemburg besser in ihren Regionen integriert werden, dabei ihre sprachlichen Fähigkeiten entwickeln und die erforderliche Medienkompetenz erlernen? Diesen Fragen hat sich ein grenzüberschreitendes bilaterales Entwicklungs- und Forschungsprojekt gewidmet, wobei ein „Partizipativer Design“ Ansatz (Danielsson & Wiberg, 2006) angewandt wurde. Unter der Leitung eines Teams der Hochschule Trier wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen der Escher Brill Schule und der Trierer Kurfürst-Balduin-Realschule sowie einem Team der Universität Luxemburg, während des Schuljahres 2016/2017, die mobile App „Tell Your Town" entwickelt. Ziel war es erfundene Geschichten an echten Schauplätzen in Trier und Esch auf Deutsch, Französisch, Englisch und Luxemburgisch in spielerischer Form zu erzählen. Die Geschichten, Schauplätze und Routen wurden in Design Workshops partizipativ erarbeitet. Ein Team an der Hochschule Trier setzte die App anschließend um und ein Team der Universität Luxemburg dokumentierte, analysierte und evaluierte die Benutzung der App durch die SchülerInnen in Feldversuchen in Trier und in Esch, mit Hilfe teilnehmender Beobachtungen, Videographie und Befragungen von SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen, um technische und pädagogische Rückmeldungen an die EntwicklerInnen und LehrerInnen zu geben. Bei diesem Projekt ist eine frei verfügbare App entstanden, welche die Benutzer dazu einlädt eine der beiden Städte „per pedes“ zu entdecken und dabei noch so einiges über die Geschichte der Stadt zu erfahren, was ihnen durch einen fiktionalen Reiseführer in interaktiven Dialogen vermittelt wird. Dabei wird die Geolokalisierungsfunktion des Smartphones genutzt um den Benutzer zu bedeutsamen Sehenswürdigkeiten zu führen, wo dann interaktive Minispiele oder Dialoge mit dem fiktionalen Reiseführer erfolgen. In der Route Esch steht die Geschichte des Luxemburgischen Bergbaus und den dortigen Minenarbeitern im Mittelpunkt. Die Route Trier handelt von einem Wettlauf zwischen Karl Marx und Nero. In diesem wird der Spieler von Karl Marx begleitet und lernt so bekannte Orte aus Trier kennen. Mit Hilfe der Feldversuche wurde sichtbar, dass die App großes Potential hat, um eine relativ autonome Erkundung der Städte zu initiieren und es auch den einheimischen SchülerInnen erlaubt, ihre Stadt mit neuen Augen bewusster wahrzunehmen. Les six Centres de Langues (Luxembourg, Kaiserslautern, Liège, Lorraine, Sarre et Trèves) de la Grande Région travaillent ensemble à la création d’un parcours pédagogique en ligne d’apprentissage de langues dans le cadre du projet Erasmus+ LCGR (Language Center Greater Region) dans la période d’octobre 2017 à octobre 2019. Des activités à réaliser en collaboration sont scénarisées pédagogiquement pour impliquer et accompagner les étudiants, candidats à une mobilité internationale, dans la collecte d’informations sur leur futur échange. L’objectif du projet est de guider les étudiants, de les motiver à profiter de la chance d’avoir quatre pays dans un rayon de 200 km² et ainsi d’approfondir leurs compétences linguistiques et interculturelles. Suite à la phase pilote du projet, en plus des questionnaires des étudiants, nous analyserons les questionnaires remplis par les enseignants afin d’expliquer les choix de modifications apportées à la plateforme avant son ouverture officielle. This thesis focuses on a novel dual-grid multiscale approach to CFD- DEM1 couplings, proposes its advantages in terms of numerical proper- ties and performance, and provides examples of engineering applications that can benefit from it. In recent years, CFD-DEM couplings are be- coming a more and more adopted solution for the numerical simulation of particle-laden flows. In particular, couplings based on the volume av- eraging technique have become a standard for numerical simulations in chemical and process engineering. Furthermore, they are rapidly spread- ing to civil, geotechnical and mechanical applications due to their ability in dealing with arbitrarily complex mixtures of continuum and granular media. Despite the several advantages that these Eulerian-Lagrangian cou- plings provide, their rigorous application to complex scenarios is currently limited by two main factors. First, the computational traceability of the solutions can become problematic due to the lack of a general theory on the subject. In particular, grid-convergence studies for the solution of the continuous phases are often not feasible due to the averaging procedure that imposes limitations on the grid structure and refinement. Second, the parallel implementation of these numerical schemes holds important disadvantages in terms of memory consumption and inter-physics com- munication load. These disadvantages are significantly limiting the ex- tension of these approaches to large-scale scenarios. This thesis collects some of the most significant works published in the last years on a novel approach that allows solving the two above- mentioned problems, and, therefore, tackling more complex and expen- sive scenarios. I refer to this approach as dual-grid multiscale approach for CFD-DEM couplings. It consists in using two different computational grids, one for the coupling between continuum and discrete entities and one for the solution of the so-obtained continuum equations. The two grids, i.e. the two problems, are in this way resolved on two different scales. The first scale or “bulk” scale is chosen to optimize the averag- ing operation. At this length-scale, the discrete entities are considered as zero-dimensional, and interact with the fluid with local exchanges of momentum, mass, and energy. The second scale or “fluid-fine” scale is identified as the one at which a unique solution for the averaged equa- tions can be provided. In practice, this is chosen as the one at which the solution of the fluid equations becomes grid-independent. An inter-scale communication is adopted by interpolating fields from the fluid-fine scale to the bulk one and vice-versa. The theoretical description of the method is first provided with par- ticular reference to the DEM-VOF coupling. Even in its simplest version, the multiscale approach is shown to generate grid-convergent solutions and significantly higher accuracy than a standard CFD-DEM coupling. This shows how the new approach is able to overcome the first main limitation described above. Then, an optimized parallel implementation of the method is pro- posed to show how this multiscale approach can provide significant ben- efits also for what concerns the execution time. Technically, this is made possible by moving the communication cost of the coupling from the inter-physics communication that characterized the standard CFD-DEM couplings to an optimized inter-scale communication routine. This en- ables the method to overcome a major bottleneck of the parallel execution of CFD-DEM couplings and therefore the second main limitation of those schemes. Finally, the dual-grid multiscale method is applied to approach in- dustrially relevant problems that were till now out-of-reach for standard CFD-DEM couplings, proving how this technique can have direct real- case application and produce immediate benefits for practitioners willing to adopt it. The aim of the current project is to utilize log-file data to enhance the understanding of strategy use in Complex Problem Solving (CPS). CPS can be defined as the ability to manipulate the existing variables of a particular novel, complex, intransparent, and dynamic environment successfully in order to reach a predefined goal. In order to successfully solve a CPS task, the goal-directed application and variation of certain strategies is necessary. To uncover the systematic use of these strategies, log-files have been deemed a fruitful resource as they contain not only the final results of a computer-based CPS item, but also the individual steps undertaken while solving such a task. Recent studies using log-files have highlighted the importance of some strategies for CPS, like the varying one variable at a time (VOTAT) strategy, or of engaging in noninterfering observations (i.e., idle rounds). In addition, other strategies have also been shown to be relevant in neighboring fields of CPS. However, comprehensive studies investigating a broad repertoire of strategies applied in CPS are scarce. Hence, on the basis of existing large-scale assessment data sets, the present project set out to investigate which strategies hidden in log-files are relevant for solving a CPS task in order to gain a more thorough understanding of how CPS tasks are being approached. Preliminary findings indicate that, in addition to VOTAT and idle rounds, particularly the flexibility of switching between strategies should be taken into account. [less ▲]

We devise a shallow semantical embedding of \AA{}qvist's dyadic deontic logic {\bf E} in classical higher-order logic. This embedding is encoded in Isabelle/HOL, which turns this system into a proof assistant for deontic logic reasoning. The experiments with this environment provide evidence that this logic \textit{implementation} fruitfully enables interactive and automated reasoning at the meta-level and the object-level. [less ▲]

Old maps are increasingly being digitised and included in digital libraries to provide access to these historically valuable documents to a wider audience. The need was identified to enrich the digital copies of the old maps with annotations that enable a quick search for relevant information and linking with other documents. Because such a manual annotation of old maps is a labour- and cost-intensive process and is therefore only carried out for particularly valuable documents, the large mass of old maps remains unexplored. With this motivation, the aim of this research project was to automatise to a great extent the process of object detection and annotation in the old maps. However, existing methods for automated information extraction from maps are designed for modern maps. They are usually limited to certain map types that have similar graphical characteristics. Alternatively there are tools for manual annotation of map data. Until now, annotation of old maps was only supported by tools that enabled manual extraction of map data and the digital storage of annotated information. The research objectives for this dissertation have been formulated based on the research frame given at the beginning of this work. The research objectives include automatic identification of place markers, automatic detection of text labels, their Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and an automatic linking with a modern map or a geographical database. In order to meet the research objectives, mainly methods of machine learning were used. Both classic machine learning methods and deep-learning-based methods have been extended to meet the requirements of the specific domain of old maps. Old maps of Luxembourg and the Franconian Circle were used as a data set. In order to find place markers automatically, a template matching variant was developed which is robust against interfering objects next to the place markers to be recognised. The method is also applicable in other areas with similar properties. Furthermore, both rule-based and statistical methods were tailored to the domain of the old maps with the purpose to find the position of the text labels. In order to make the identified texts readable, a new OCR engine was implemented that produces only a quarter of the character errors compared with a state-of-the-art OCR tool, while using the same training data. The georeferencing was examined for two types of map pairs: an old and a modern map, and two old maps. It was found that automatic georeferencing between two old maps can not only be used to find errors in manual annotations, but can also provide new historical insights, such as small changes in the copper plates from which the maps were printed (e.g. adding a small number of places that is not documented anywhere else). A referencing and annotation tool has been implemented to collect training and test data. This tool can also be used to test the automations and to correct automatically collected data. Overall, the present work makes a contribution in the areas of object recognition in graphics, scene text detection, OCR and georeferencing. It is shown which effort is needed to make individual parts or the entire area of old maps automatically readable and where the current limits of the automation are. Finally, this research shows the huge potential and the impact of such digital tools in the entire area of digital humanities. [less ▲]

The success of implementing inclusive practice depends on teachers´ competence as well as their attitudes. Attitudes are defined as psychological tendencies expressed by evaluating a particular entity with some degree of favor or disfavor. Research has provided mixed results concerning teachers´ attitudes toward students with SEN and inclusive practice, whereby teachers generally have more positive attitudes toward the inclusion of students with mild SEN than toward students with complex needs. Training, especially modules focusing on the cognitive processes underlying judgment, can facilitate positive change in attitudes toward inclusion of students with SEN. In a pre–post-test design, data were collected for a sample of 33 experienced primary school teachers attending a course (2x4hr) on inclusion with a focus on the role of attitudes in decision-making and behavior. We assessed general attitudes toward the inclusion of students with SEN as well as teachers´ emotional reactions, stereotypes and behavioural intentions. Results of a repeated measures ANOVA, with time (pre vs. post) and general attitude toward inclusion (4 subscales) as within group factors only showed a main effect for attitudes, reflecting variations between the subscale scores. The training course did not result in changes in general attitudes. Further analyses revealed a positive pre-post course change in teachers´ emotional reactions concerning the inclusion of a student with SEN in their class. Teachers´ stereotype ratings indicated they perceived students with learning difficulties as less competent but warm, whereas students with challenging behavior were perceived as relatively competent but average in warmth. Finally, teachers´ behavioral intentions shifted from focusing on finding solutions within the classroom to more cooperation with colleagues, parents and experts to provide the best support for the student with SEN. In sum, the training course impacted both the affective and conative components of attitudes, whereas general attitudes toward inclusion remained unchanged. [less ▲]

In this paper, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with high aspect ratio were dispersed into epoxy matrix via mechanical stirring and ultrasonic treatment to fabricate self-sensing CNFs/epoxy composites. The mechanical, electrical and piezoresistive properties of the nanocomposites filled with different contents of CNFs were investigated. Based on the tunneling conduction and percolation conduction theories, the mechanisms of piezoresistive property of the nanocomposites were also explored. The experimental results show that adding CNFs can effectively enhance the compressive strengths and elastic moduli of the composites. The percolation threshold of the CNFs/epoxy composites is 0.186 vol% according to the modified General Effective Media Equation. Moreover, the stable and sensitive piezoresistive response of CNFs/epoxy composites was observed under monotonic and cyclic loadings. It can be demonstrated that adding CNFs into epoxy-based composites provides an innovative means of self-sensing, and the high sensitivity and stable piezoresistivity endow the CNFs/epoxy composites with considerable potentials as efficient compressive strain sensors for structural health monitoring of civil infrastructures. In this work, a new partition-collocation strategy for the parallel execution of CFD–DEM couplings is investigated. Having a good parallel performance is a key issue for an Eulerian-Lagrangian software that aims to be applied to solve industrially significant problems, as the computational cost of these couplings is one of their main drawback. The approach presented here consists in co-locating the overlapping parts of the simulation domain of each software on the same MPI process, in order to reduce the cost of the data exchanges. It is shown how this strategy allows reducing memory consumption and inter-process communication between CFD and DEM to a minimum and therefore to overcome an important parallelization bottleneck identified in the literature. Three benchmarks are proposed to assess the consistency and scalability of this approach. A coupled execution on 280 cores shows that less than 0.1% of the time is used to perform inter-physics data exchange. [less ▲]
