Attention plays a pivotal role in the experience of pain and its impact upon daily activities. Accordingly, research on the interplay between attention and pain has a long scientific history. Within this chapter, we discuss the theoretical frameworks that aim to explain the relationship between attention and pain. We argue for a motivational perspective on pain that highlights the critical role of cognitive, affective and contextual factors in explaining the interplay between attention and pain. To substantiate this argument, we provide an overview of available research addressing the bottom-up capture of attention by pain and the top-down modulation (both inhibition and facilitation) of attention for pain. We conclude this chapter with guidelines and suggestions for future research and discuss clinical implications of adopting a motivational perspective on pain. [less ▲]

Children’s development of verbal number skills (i.e, counting abilities and knowledge of the number names) presents a milestone in mathematical development. Different factors such as visuo-spatial and verbal abilities have been discussed to contribute to the development of these foundational skills. To understand the cognitive nature of verbal number skills in young children, the present study assessed the relation of preschoolers’ verbal and visuo-spatial abilities to their verbal number skills. In total, 141 children aged between five and six years participated in the present study. Verbal number skills were regressed on vocabulary, phonological awareness and visuo-spatial abilities, as well as verbal and visuo-spatial working memory in a structural equation model. Only visuo-spatial abilities emerged as a significant predictor of verbal number skills in the estimated model. Our results suggest that visuo-spatial abilities contribute to a larger extent to children’s verbal number skills than verbal abilities. From a theoretical point of view, these results suggest a visuo-spatial, rather than a verbal, grounding of verbal number skills. These results are potentially informative for the conception of early mathematics assessments and interventions. [less ▲]

The interest in studying addictive use of online sexual activities (OSA) has grown sharply over the last decade. Despite the burgeoning number of studies conceptualizing the excessive use of OSA as an addictive disorder, few have tested its relations to impulsivity, which is known to constitute a hallmark of addictive behaviors. To address this missing gap in the literature, we tested the relationships between addictive OSA use, impulsivity traits, and affect among a convenience sample of men (N = 182; age, M = 29.17), building upon a theoretically driven model that distinguishes the various facets of impulsivity. Results showed that negative urgency (an impulsivity trait reflecting the tendency to act rashly in negative emotional states) and negative affect interact in predicting addictive OSA use. These results highlight the pivotal role played by negative urgency and negative affect in addictive OSA use, supporting the relevance of psychological interventions that focus on improving emotional regulation (e.g., to reduce negative affect and learn healthier coping strategies) to mitigate excessive use of OSA. A novel multiscale approach for three-phase flows is presented. The goal of the proposed method is to solve arbitrary three-phase flow configurations in a computationally efficient way, and in particular taking into account the effects of different length scales while sharply reducing the computational burden. This is particularly important in chemical, environmental, and process engineering, where large-scale quantities are normally of interest, but small-scale dynamics cannot be neglected. The method is based on the definition of two different length scales: the bulk scale, and the fluid fine scale. A dual-grid approach is adopted in order to resolve the bulk scale with information from the fluid fine scale. It is shown that the described method succeeds in delivering more accuracy than a standard approach based on the volume averaging technique, still, it remains suitable for the solution of real interest problems. The method is shown to successfully satisfy experimental results presented in the literature. Examples of three-phase flows simulations are provided to show how the proposed numerical approach can describe the physics of particle-laden, free surface flows with competitive computational cost. It is shown how the proposed method can naturally extend the DEM-VOF method to the presence of complex interface dynamics. [less ▲]

Although conceptually not new, ransomware recently regained attraction in the cybersecurity community: notorious attacks in fact have caused serious damage, proving their disruptive effect. This is likely just the beginning of a new era. According to a recent intelligence report by Cybersecurity Ventures, the total cost due to ransomware attacks is predicted to exceed $5 billion in 2017. How can this disruptive threat can be contained? Current anti-ransomware solutions are effective only against existing threats, and the worst is yet to come. Cyber criminals will design and deploy more sophisticated strategies, overcoming current defenses and, as it commonly happens in security, defenders and attackers will embrace a competition that will never end. In this arm race, anticipating how current ransomware will evolve may help at least being prepared for some future damage. In this paper, we describe existing techniques to mitigate ransomware and we discuss their limitations. Discussing how current ransomware could become even more disruptive and elusive is crucial to conceive more solid defense and systems that can mitigate zero-day ransomware, yielding higher security levels for information systems, including critical infrastructures such as intelligent transportation networks and health institutions. The Named-Data Networking (NDN) has emerged as a clean-slate Internet proposal on the wave of Information-Centric Networking. Although the NDN’s data-plane seems to offer many advantages, e.g., native support for multicast communications and flow balance, it also makes the network infrastructure vulnerable to a specific DDoS attack, the Interest Flooding Attack (IFA). In IFAs, a botnet issuing unsatisfiable content requests can be set up effortlessly to exhaust routers’ resources and cause a severe performance drop to legitimate users. So far several countermeasures have addressed this security threat, however, their efficacy was proved by means of simplistic assumptions on the attack model. Therefore, we propose a more complete attack model and design an advanced IFA. We show the efficiency of our novel attack scheme by extensively assessing some of the state-of-the-art countermeasures. Further, we release the software to perform this attack as open source tool to help design future more robust defense mechanisms. [less ▲]

Information systems implementing requirements from laws and regulations, such as taxes and social benefits, need to be thoroughly verified to demonstrate their compliance. Several Verification and Validation (V&V) techniques, such as reliability testing, and modeling and simulation, can be used for assessing that such systems meet their legal. Typically, one has to model the expected (legal) behavior of the system in a form that can be executed (simulated), subject the resulting models and the system to the same input data, and then compare the observed behavior of the model simulation and system execution. Existing V&V techniques often rely on code and complex logical expressions with no intuitive appeal to legal experts for specifying the expected behavior of a given system. Subsequently, one has no practical way to validate with legal experts that the underlying legal requirements are indeed complete and constitute a faithful representation of what needs to be implemented. Further, manually defining the expected behavior of a system and its test oracles is a tedious and error-prone task. The challenge here is to find a suitable knowledge representation that can be understood by all the involved stakeholders, e.g., software engineers and legal experts, but that remains complete and precise enough to enable automated analysis such as simulation and testing. As real data is seldom accessible in highly regulated domains, V&V requires the generation of synthetic testing data that can be used to build confidence in the reliability of the system under test. In particular, such data has to be structurally and logically well-formed to raise meaningful failures that can help reasoning about the reliability of the system under test. Further, the data should exhibit as much as possible the actual or anticipated system usage to help mimic how the system would behave under realistic circumstances. Generating such data is not a trivial task as the underlying data schemas are usually large and subject to numerous complex domain-related logical constraints. In this thesis, we investigate the use of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and model-driven technologies, e.g., model to code transformations, to facilitate V&V activities for information systems that have to conform to laws and regulations, while tackling the above challenges. All our technical solutions have been developed and empirically evaluated in close collaboration with a government administration. Concretely, the technical solutions covered by this thesis include: - A modeling notation and methodology for formalizing legal policies. We propose a modeling notation and methodology for building abstract interpretations of the law. Models built using our methodology are simple enough to be understood by the involved stakeholders and are, at the same time, detailed enough to enable automated V&V activities. - A model-based simulation framework. We develop a model-based framework and associated tool support for simulating legal policies, when formalized using the aforementioned modeling methodology. Simulation provides a comparison baseline of how a compliant system should behave. Further, simulation is a mean to support decision-making when considering legal changes. Specifically, we report on a sizable case study where we assess the anticipated economic implications of a given policy change in Luxembourg’s tax law. - A model-based generator of test cases for reliability testing. We develop a heuristic approach for generating valid and representative test cases (data). Our generator is scalable and produces high-quality test data that is suitable for testing the reliability of data-intensive systems, e.g., a tax management system. [less ▲]

From a phenomenological perspective on modern systems of knowledge production a transformation towards a hybrid knowledge production has taken place. Categories like locality or embeddedness have been overcome and rise of arenas of cross-broader-cooperation can be observed. The political sector is an important example where a rise of decision-making contexts with supra national relevance can be detected. As consequence a transformation of the political advisory-system towards the genesis of multinational advisory organisations on supranational level can be observed. This means that decision-making knowledge is developed and standardized on supranational level and supposed to be applied top-down on local level. Theoretically such a cooperative form of knowledge co-production of application-driven knowledge by a heterogeneous set of stakeholders aims to produce a context specific solution for specific problems of application (“socially robust knowledge”) in order to provide evidence-based policy-making. But in fact such a processes of unification of knowledge on supranational level often reduces national policy autonomy and is associated with the risk of limited compliance to the specific local needs. Thus the universal transnational knowledge is systematically contested by a variety of particularistic relevancies as is lacks in socially robustness for the application on national decision-making level (“dialectic of transnational integration and disintegration “. This paper analyses how national policy systems are responding to global integration initiatives. By using an in-depth-case-study, I focus especially on individual actors and their responses in the light of a multiplicity of institutional relevancies and the effective social robustness of the aggregated knowledge on national level. This contribution presents data from an ongoing doctoral research project that focuses on the linguistic integration trajectory of Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Luxembourg. Drawing on interview data and classroom observations we explore teachers’ and learners’ attitudes towards Luxembourg’s main languages and their beliefs about how to approach language learning in a multilingual society. Upon arrival, refugees are immediately exposed to the country’s immense linguistic diversity along with ambiguous and often competing ideologies as to what languages to learn. While French is the main vernacular language, English has been gaining importance as lingua franca of the Grand Duchy’s large international community. Government sources increasingly emphasise the role of Luxembourgish as the sole language of integration, despite its minority position in several domains. Other languages such as German or Portuguese might be equally important for navigating local life. Refugees from regions where (a regional/dialectal form of) Arabic enjoys the status of majority language, are expected to encounter difficulties in adapting to the complex language situation of Luxembourg. As a result, the research participants have shown a strong interest in developing different capabilities in a variety of languages and for a range of purposes. Our data confirms that wide-ranging learning outcomes are pursued in this context. While teachers acknowledge the importance of this aspect for setting language learning goals, system-wide, policy-declared goals still prevail in their pedagogical practice. Yet, we have observed instances of more holistic approaches that recognize the multilingual character of communication and learning, and take better account of the learners’ short- and long-term expectations. We present the notion of a filtered bundle as a generalization of a graded bundle. In particular, we weaken the necessity of the transformation laws for local coordinates to exactly respect the weight of the coordinates by allowing more general polynomial transformation laws. The key examples of such bundles include affine bundles and various jet bundles, both of which play fundamental roles in geometric mechanics and classical field theory. We also present the notion of double filtered bundles which provide natural generalizations of double vector bundles and double affine bundles. Furthermore, we show that the linearization of a filtered bundle — which can be seen as a partial polarization of the admissible changes of local coordinates — is well defined. [less ▲]
