A pump experiment of two astronomical heterodyne receivers, a superconductorinsulator- superconductor SIS receiver at 450 GHz and a hot-electron-bolometer HEB receiver at 750 GHz, is reported. A low-temperature-grown GaAs metal-semiconductor-metal photonic local oscillator LO was illuminated by two near infrared semiconductor lasers, generating a beat frequency in the submillimeter range. I-V junction characteristics for different LO pump power levels demonstrate that the power delivered by the photomixer is sufficient to pump a SIS and a HEB mixer. SIS receiver noise temperatures were compared using a conventional solid-state LO anda photonic LO. In both cases, the best receiver noise temperature was identical Tsys=170 K . [less ▲]

We have fabricated and characterized photomixers based on high energy nitrogen-ion-implanted GaAs. For material optimization and annealing dynamics in MSM photodetector structures, we used 400 keV implantation energy with an ion dose of 1´1016 cm-2. For photomixer structures we used 3 MeV energy to implant N+ ions into GaAs substrates, with an ion concentration dose of 3´1012 cm-2. The N+-implanted GaAs photomixers exhibit improved output power in comparison to their counterparts, photomixers fabricated on low-temperature-grown GaAs. The highest output power was 2.6 μW at 850 GHz and about 1 μW at 1 THz. No saturation of the output power with increased bias voltage and optical input power was observed. These characteristics make N+-implanted GaAs the material of choice for efficient high power sources of terahertz radiation. [less ▲]

The interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor complex comprises the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R, gp80) and the signal transducer gp130. Binding of IL-6 to its receptor results in dimerization of gp130, activation of the Jak/STAT pathway, and in a down-regulation of IL-6 binding sites by endocytosis. The STAT activation after stimulation is transient, being maximal after 15-30 min and disappearing after 60-90 min. The mechanism which leads to the termination of the signal is still unknown. In this paper we have studied whether the down-modulation of the STAT signal requires the endocytosis of the receptor complex. Our results suggest that the desensitization of the IL-6 signal is not due to internalization of the receptor complex but requires de novo protein synthesis. [less ▲]

The paper deals with the territoriality expressed by the employees of a border plant in the automotive industry: smart in Hambach (Moselle, France). As a branch of the German group Daimler AG, led by a German director, the plant is an original place where distinct languages and nationalities coexist. In order to highlight the employees´ attitudes and representations on the territory, an interdisciplinary methodology has been set up, which is based on semi-structured interviews and mental maps. The results show different meanings for territoriality, where national borders are rarely directly expressed, although they play a structuring role in people´s representations. Three main types of representation emerge, whether they come from persons having their roots in the region, from persons with an expatriate profile, or from persons presenting some uncertainty as regards identity spatial markers. The creation of the territorial principalities was a lengthy process that was still far from over in the mid-fourteenth century. It is best not to speak of ‘states’ even in this period. But by this time the great lords of old Lotharingia had, by and large, succeeded in replacing the old face-to-face mode of lordship, and in integrating the regional nobles and burghers, and a majority of the newer religious foundations, into a ‘land’. All the different powers, both noble and burgher, as well as the prince, benefited from the establishment of a large territory with common peace and law, which protected them against outside threats and internal fragmentation, and from the encouragement of economic development. The integration of knightly vassals and burghers into the structures of government made the territorial lordships more efficient thanks to their differing areas of expertise. [less ▲]
