Even though the important role of early institutional language teaching has been proved by numerous studies, the practical applications of these findings are still very rare. In the Saarland, one of the German Laender which is situated on the border with France, a pilote project examinates the learning behaviour and mechanism with German primary school children learning French, their neighbouring language, from age 6 on. The author is the coordinator of the scientific team which follows the project from a universitarian point of view. The aim of the paper is to show the important role code-switching plays in this kind of teaching environment and it tries to evaluate its importance by giving examples from different stages of progress during the first two years of learning. Even though the important role of early institutional language teaching has been proved by numerous studies, the practical applications of these findings are still very rare.
