Observations of sea level can only be interpreted correctly if land motion in particular in terms of vertical deformation of coastal areas is taken into account. In the last decades space geodetic techniques such as VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging), the GPS (Global Positioning System), and Doris (Doppler Orbitography and Radio positioning Integrated by Satellite) have proved to be very powerful for determining displacements of points on the solid Earth. These can be modeled by using various geodynamical parameters, e.g. the Love and Shida numbers in the model of the solid Earth tides and site-dependent amplitudes and phases of the ocean loading models. Today, the small deformations associated with the response of the Earth to atmospheric and hydrological loading are of growing interest. These effects cause site-dependent vertical displacements with ranges up to ±30mm due to atmospheric pressure variations and due to mass redistribution in surface fluid envelopes, in particular in continental water reservoirs (soil moisture, snow, and groundwater). Several new global and regional models of soil moisture and snow depths are now available and can be validated by space geodetic techniques. This paper is intended to give a short overview about state-of-the-art of modeling loading effects. A short introduction to the Special Bureau for Loading within the Global Geophysical Fluid Center (GGFC) of the IERS will be given, too. Finally, it will be shown how the effects influence the results of high precision space geodetic measurements. The paper mainly concentrates on vertical crustal motions on seasonal and interannual time scales observed by VLBI and describes also some results obtained from Doris. [less ▲]

One of the unresolved issues regarding research on bulimia nervosa concerns the question as to how patients diagnosed with bulimia nervosa respond to body image exposure. In addition, it remains unclear whether there are differential responses associated with different exposure techniques (e.g. in vivo exposure vs. exposure by visualization). The aim of the present study was to investigate psychological responses to body image exposure. Twenty participants diagnosed with bulimia nervosa (DSM IV) and twenty non-eating disordered individuals were exposed to their body image using a video recording (video confrontation). In addition, they were asked to imagine and describe the appearance of their body (imagery task). Results indicate that self-reported negative emotions increased in response to both, video confrontation and imagery task, in the clinical as well as in the control group. Furthermore, video confrontation led to more pronounced group differences than exposure by visualization (imagery task). Participants diagnosed with bulimia nervosa took less time to describe their waist, hips and bottom compared to non-eating disturbed controls. This last result could be interpreted in terms of avoidance behavior and other mechanisms during body image exposure. [less ▲]

This article concerns the greedy learning of gaussian mixtures. In the greedy approach, mixture components are inserted into the mixture one aftertheother. We propose a heuristic for searching for the optimal component to insert. In a randomized manner, a set of candidate new components is generated. For each of these candidates, we find the locally optimal new component and insert it into the existing mixture. The resulting algorithm resolves the sensitivity to initialization of state-of-the-art methods, like expectation maximization, and has running time linear in the number of data points and quadratic in the (final) number of mixture components. Due to its greedy nature, the algorithm can be particularly useful when the optimal number of mixture components is unknown. Experimental results comparing the proposed algorithm to other methods on density estimation and texture segmentation are provided. [less ▲]

At an early stage of instructed foreign language learning (French), young learners develop a simplest language which reflects similarities with adult learner varieties, Creole systems and strategies of (first) language acquisition. Due to the fact that their L1 (German) has still to be extended, especially in terms of the written variety, learners interact in an environment with specific language use. Considering young learners language production, examples of article use in instructed interaction were investigated. [less ▲]
