The benefits brought to composite construction by the use of semi-continuous joints are well recognised and confirmed by the significant amount of research which has been performed in this area. It has been analytically proven that at serviceability limit state (SLS) the performance of composite beams benefits from the use of semi-continuous composite joints [1]. At ultimate limit state (ULS) it is of common knowledge that the use of semi-continuous composite joints is only judicious in combination with the plastic hinge theory, which requires the verification of the rotation capacity of the joint. Despite all the effort done in this area, a concise and well-defined method to determine the rotation capacity of composite joints is lacking. Hence, a research programme with a large experimental part has been designed to investigate the behaviour of the connection between a column and a composite slim-floor beam subjected to a negative bending moment. It is the first time that the rotation capacity of an encased composite joint is analysed. The experimental campaign, presented in here, aims at determining the influence of each joint component on the rotation capacity of composite joints. Three test series have been performed; on boltless beam-to-column connections using variable longitudinal reinforcement ratio and bar diameter of the slab, on a bare bolted end-plate steel connection without reinforced concrete slab and finally on the encased composite joint with the complete bolted end-plate connection. This paper presents a detailed description of the tested specimen, shows the main results of the experimental investigations and gives an outlook on future work regarding this research project. The final goal of the research project is to develop a comprehensive methodology to predict the rotation capacity for traditional and slim-floor type of composite beams. [less ▲]

The results of a parametric study on ten short-span composite beam tests with small degrees of shear connection between 12 and 46% are presented. The beam tests were conducted using composite slabs with two modern forms of profiled steel sheeting. Important parameters of the shear connection, such as stud diameter, number of studs per rib, reinforcement pattern, welding procedure and concrete strength, were varied. All the test configurations were selected in accordance with a previously conducted study on the behaviour of shear connectors in push-out specimens. A comparison of the bending resistance of the beam tests and the calculated plastic bending resistance is presented. The shear connector resistances were taken either from the push-out test results or from the analytical methods of Konrad, EN 1994-1-1 and Nellinger. Evaluation of the push-out and beam test results showed that the current shear connector resistances in EN 1994-1-1 insufficiently predict the observed concrete failure modes and resistances in the presence of modern forms of steel decking. New approaches to the shear connector resistance proposed by Konrad and Nellinger led to more accurate predictions of the shear resistance of headed studs and the plastic bending resistance of the composite beam tests. This paper presents the results of 20 push-out tests on shear stud connectors, placed centrally in the ribs of 58 mm and 80 mm deep steel decking. The tests were designed to investigate the realistic load–slip behaviour of the shear connectors and the influence of transverse loading. The tests considered two different stud diameters and the effect of concentric and eccentric transverse loading. In addition, the influence of a second layer of reinforcement, thewelding procedure and the number of shear connectors in each rib have been considered. The observed influence of these parameters on the load–slip behaviour is presented and explained with regard to material properties and load-bearing models. In addition, the test results are compared with the current analytical approaches,which are shown to be non-conservative in some cases, because the presented deck shapeswere not well considered in the development and calibration of EN 1994-1-1. The objective of this article is to facilitate the use of semi-continuous joints by providing ready-to-use tables and charts for design, which also permit the benefits accruing from the use of semi-continuous composite beams to be directly identified. The relevant features for the design of composite beams, such as bending moment distribution, maximum deflection and natural frequency, are derived analytically. The influence of semi-continuous steel joints on the performance of single-span composite beams is analysed. The article concludes with an example of the use of a new slim-floor beam type – the composite slim-floor beam (CoSFB). The tables and charts derived are applied in this example with the intention of demonstrating the advantages of using semi-continuous joints in combination with composite beams. The present article extends the design of semi-continuous steel beams presented in the previous article on this subject. [less ▲]

This article explains a method for determining how semi-continuous joints influence the deflection, natural frequency and bending moment distribution of single-span beams with constant inertia under uniformly distributed load. The method is adequate for simple hand calculations, allowing the structural engineer to assess potential savings already in the pre-design phase. Further, the economical potential of semi-continuous joints according to EN 1993-1-8 is demonstrated by an application example. [less ▲]

The development of the “CoSFB-Betondübel” is presented in this paper. The “CoSFB-Betondübel” is a deep-embedded concrete dowel connecting in situ concrete with a steel section to assure composite action and thus allow for composite beam design. The loadbearing behaviour and parameters influencing this behaviour were determined through experimental tests. Special focus was given to the influence of the ratio of the resistance of the concrete dowel to the concrete compression class. The evaluation of the results concluded in a National Technical Approval [1]. Further investigations were performed via FE analysis in ABAQUS. Further, 3D models with non-linear material and geometry were prepared and validation undertaken. In addition, a real application example of CoSFB is shown. [less ▲]
