The solemnly proclaimed European Pillar of Social Rights provides a meaningful response to the process of building a deeper, fairer European Union in the aftermath of the crisis. This chapter aims to provide a critical assessment of the nature, scope, rationale, purpose, content and effectiveness of the Pillar in the light of its potential contribution to foster social fairness and competitiveness in the EU. The Pillar complements and develops the EU’s social acquis and reinforces standards which may provide a fairer and more socially-balanced competitiveness in the EU. Progress has been made, but further efforts are needed to build a sense of common purpose to strengthen the social foundations of the Union. [less ▲]

The debate on the sustainability of the European model(s) is becoming increasingly urgent. The multidimensional crisis that has been felt across the world since 2007 has revealed a deep need to raise awareness of the important social aspect of European integration. This paper aims to provide a critical assessment of how the crisis and austerity measures have affected the protection of fundamental social rights in the euro area. The paper argues that the continued success and the sustainability of the European project largely depends on a renewed emphasis on its social dimension [less ▲]

One lesson afforded by the recent economic and financial crisis is the need to recreate a process of convergence among Member States and within societies, with productivity, job creation and social fairness at its core. The paper looks at how the initiative for a European Pillar of Social Rights contributes to the sustainability of socio-economic rights, offers a comparison with existing social rights protection instruments and examines its added value. It argues that there is also room for greater convergence and complementarity between the various systems established to protect fundamental social rights in Europe. [less ▲]

The initiative for a European pillar of social rights launched by Jean Claude Juncker is expected to serve as a "compass" for the renewed convergence within the euro area. Social rights are therefore returning to centre stage as part of a deeper, fairer Economic and Monetary Union. Against this backdrop, this paper analyses the role and effectiveness of these fundamental rights as instruments in the service of the new European economic governance. [less ▲]

Building on the innovative scholarly production models developed by the CVCE, this contribution explores the conceptual framework and the exploitation for research and knowledge transfer purposes of audiovisual sources, in particular in-depth interviews with key individual players of the European integration process. The interviews are chiefly conducted for research purposes, namely to provide new primary sources as complementary material to written text that can help to contrast and refine research findings, and also as a source of corroborative evidence that can offer unique insights given the nature of the medium and provide a “behind-the-scenes” view of European integration. It can be also seen as a cross-cutting method that fosters interdisciplinary and holistic approaches. [less ▲]

This working paper aims to provide a critical assessment of the impact of the economic and financial crisis on the protection of fundamental social rights in the euro area. It is based on a comparative analysis of national and European case law in connection with the macroeconomic adjustment programmes in the euro area Member States receiving financial assistance. The austerity measures have been challenged before the relevant authorities at national and European level within the Council of Europe and the EU, with mixed results. It also examines new issues raised by the introduction of the European Stability Mechanism from the angle of fundamental rights. Finally, the initiative for a European Pillar of Social Rights is placed in the broader context of the multilevel protection of social rights in Europe. Converging approaches are needed. [less ▲]

This interdisciplinary contribution aims to look back at the past and provide some insights from historical sources which may be used today as key comparative tools for the interpretation and analysis of the current situation in the light of the United Kingdom’s future relationship with the European Union. This relationship is a recurring issue in the European integration process, one which has never been satisfactorily resolved. After a short historical overview of British accession to the European Communities, the presentation focuses on the 1975 referendum in order to provide some food for thought ahead of the 2016 referendum on the UK’s EU membership. It argues that, although the 1975 referendum was a product of its time and its circumstances, there is an essential common thread that links the past to the present. The forthcoming referendum is not going to change the ‘British–European pattern’ that has taken shape over the past decades. [less ▲]
