In this article a continuous-discrete high gain observer to estimate the molar compositions in a distillation column for ethanol-water mixture, using measurements of temperatures in the dishes is presented. One of the main advantages of this observer is its constant gain, so tune it depends only on the choice of constant parameters that must satisfy some simple algebraic inequalities. The continuous-discrete observer has a good track process dynamics despite using less data than an observer purely discrete. The effectiveness of the proposed method to estimate concentrations in a distillation column, and also their proper performance compared to the purely discrete version of the observer, are shown using experimental data. In this work the application of a full-order observer to a binary distillation column, using a strategy to simplify the nonlinear model is presented. Mainly for process system, it is feasible to use differential-algebraic equations for describing the dynamical behavior of the plant. A mathematical model is an extension of the traditional chemical and physical laws (such as the laws of conservation of mass, energy, momentum, etc.) to include the time-varying parameters which can be seen as singular systems. Then, the binary distillation column model is presented as a Linear Parameter Variant (LPV) singular system. Singular systems provide special features not found in traditional systems. In that sense, the proposed model maintains the dynamics and physical properties of the plant. The applied method guarantees the regularity and the convergence of the observer system. [less ▲]

In this paper we present a high-gain observer implemented in its discrete and continuous-discrete versions in order to compare the performance of both algorithms. The comparison is made considering the sampling time used to perform the observer’s correction stage in order to establish that the continuous-discrete observer is the best option when a low sampling time is used. Under this condition the continuous discrete observer can process data performing a reliable on-line estimation of the system (a slow dynamics of the process is required). We apply both algorithms to a distillation column that uses the Ethanol-Water binary mixture. [less ▲]
