The project will investigate the meaning of scale in historical writings, and more precisely how scale is expressed through language in historical discourse. This question draws attention to the conceptual and linguistic mechanisms at play in building historical knowledge, when the historian moves between different layers of analysis, narration or consulted sources, involving different degrees of generality. A small historiographical corpus, in which variations of scale are clearly present, will serve to develop the digital approach/tools/methodology. Depending on the findings of the project, an extension of the research to other types of corpora is envisaged. The paper presents a workflow and first experiments using topic modelling to analyse scale representation in historiographical data. Further experiments with more documents, other models and visualisation tools, as well as eventually creating a pipeline for semi-automatic restructuration of data as zoomable texts are also envisaged. The article presents a workflow for combining oral history and language technology, and for evaluating this combination in the context of European contemporary history research and teaching. Two experiments are devised to analyse how interdisciplinary connections between history and linguistics are built and evaluated within a digital framework. The longer term objective of this type of enquiry is to draw an “inventory” of strengths and weaknesses of language technology applied to the study of history. [less ▲]

TEI Transviewer is an interface intended to the exploration of primary and secondary sources, at the document level, in historical or other types of digital editions involving the representation of original material. Its name comes from the combination of the terms transformation and viewing, supposing the transformation of documents in XML-TEI format (directly in the browser or by means of a server/dedicated editor) so that they can be viewed in the browser. What is the meaning of scale in historical writings and migration narratives? To what extent can digital tools and methods assist the detection of scale-related patterns in these categories of documents? May this enquiry be formalised and eventually turned into a system for scale analysis in texts? To address these questions, the paper combines theoretical background from historical, historiographical, linguistic and literary studies with digital tools and methods for text analysis and visualisation. The project is in an early phase of development; theoretical hypotheses and preliminary experiments for a system dedicated to scale analysis in historical/historiographical texts are presented. Evoking the metaphors of the magnifying glass and the kaleidoscope, the system is intended to allow both scale-related patterns detection and perspective change. [less ▲]

How the frequency of words may be interpreted in the context of an informational analysis of textual corpora? To what extent the frequency values and distribution could be an indicator of the “amount of information”, the degree of “certainty” or of “informativeness” conveyed by a text? Are other factors, such as language and genre, influencing these informational measures? The paper addresses these questions from a comparative perspective using historical and literary multilingual corpora in Romanian, French, and English. [less ▲]

The paper proposes to bridge two areas of inquiry, digital hermeneutics and metaphor within a digital environment, by the analysis of a less studied phenomenon, i.e. how interpretation is supported and shaped by metaphors embedded in an interface. The study is articulated around three use cases for literary, didactic and historical representations of imaginary and existing cities based on a model (z-text) and interface (Z-editor) for zoomable texts. We will try to demonstrate that the zooming and contextualization features of the tool allow creating layers of meaning that can assist interpretation and critical readings of literature and history. The article creates a bridge between the fields of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Digital Humanities (DH), where HCI techniques are used to evaluate tools developed in DH projects and the results of this evaluation are analysed via DH methods. Two case studies in interface and game design are presented by the application of textual analysis to user-response via three systems, for visualisation of the text as a network (Textexture), corpus analysis (TXM), and sentiment analysis (TheySay). Although further experiments and more insight into the theoretical matters are intended, we assume that this kind of analysis, beyond its usability-oriented value, may inform humanistic interface design and approaching of user models, and inspire new paths of reflection on user’s self projection in the digital space, at the intersection of digital hermeneutics, digital aesthetics, and the theory of literary response. Starting from Gaston Bachelard’s assumption that “all knowledge is an answer to a question”, the study proposes the use of comparative textual analysis to formulate research questions. A set of questions were derived via the TXM, Textométrie software, a tool for lexicometry and statistical analysis. Two historical documents on the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) were examined, the Werner report and the Delors report (French versions). The “quest for questions” was based on the comparison of the documents, using the TXM specificities feature that highlights what properties are specific, as overuse or deficit, to a part versus the rest of a corpus. The documents were analysed both as entire units and as fragments (numbered parts and sections). The specificities were computed for the noun-adjective combination and parts of speech, the properties with specificity scores higher and lower than the TXM default positive and negative banality thresholds being selected for further enquiry and subsequently used to formulate research questions. Although further experiments, testing with other corpora and theoretical formalisation are required, the first results show that digital tools may serve not only as hypotheses or conclusions validators but also as means of discovering exploration paths to support interpretation and the construction of new knowledge in digital history. By combining traditional historical enquiry with TEI XML encoding and decoding in a corpus analysis phase, the project aims at addressing research questions mainly related to the French and British positions on the topics of armament design and production and of armament control within the Western European Union (WEU) from 1954 to 1982. The paper focuses on the annotation of speakers (different countries and institutional representatives) and their discourse in a selection of institutional documents (minutes, notes, studies, memoranda) (encoding phase) and the identification of linguistic patterns on armament issues in their discourse, as well as the interpretation of results (decoding phase). From a larger perspective, the study considers the TEI encoding as adding to the original text a “material” layer that further supports both machine and human interpretation (decoding). In this sense, this study may move closer to the concept of “material hermeneutics,” by understanding code, and digital technology in general, as an instrument we can use in hermeneutic ways to produce knowledge.
