The highest transparency in glass façades is obtained with point fitted glass units. Point fitted insulating glass units minimize thermal bridging and lead to glass façades with better energy efficiency. Though, insufficient knowledge is present to offer a design method for point fittings in insulating glass. Therefore research has been carried out to extend the existing SLG-design-method of Beyer for point fitted single and laminated glass to insulation glass units. This paper presents first results of this research campaign. Load bearing tests on point fittings in single glazing have been conducted. An FEA-model of the point fitting is calibrated by the test data according to the method of Kasper. By means of this verified FEA-model, the influence on the stress peak at the borehole of the edge distance of the point fitting as well as the edge bond is investigated. In addition, the size of the so called “local area” is adjusted for insulation glass units. [less ▲]

An existing office building with an active double skin façade in Luxembourg has been analyzed. In the first step in-situ measurements have been performed. For this purpose outside, inside and cavity conditions have been measured for representative summer and winter conditions. In a second step, a thermal simulation using TRNSYS was performed. The simulation model has been compared to the time limited series of measurements and thus has been validated for some of the annual meteorological conditions. Then the model has been extrapolated to a whole year in order to assess the energy performance of the given façade. Further a parametric study of alternative façades has been carried out based on the validated simulation model to assess their own performances. For the given case study building, the double skin concept energetically performs well compared to other concepts with non outside (non weather exposed) solar protection, but worse than an external solar protection. The thermal comfort level in the rooms has also been determined by simulation - the calculated room averaged comfort level is quite optimal, but further investigations regarding the local comfort close to the glazed façades still have to be achieved. Recently developed adhesive materials enable the transfer of high loads between glass and other materials for structural use. However, for a numerical simulation, the description of the non-linear behaviour of the adhesives must still be improved. Therefore extensive experimental investigations have been carried out on a structural elastomer and a material constitutive model has been derived based on the experimental results. Via numerical studies, the new constitutive model has been validated and assessed by comparison to test data and existing models. [less ▲]

The façade significantly influences the energy efficiency of the building. However, in addition to high insulating properties, modern architecture demands a high transparency for natural illumination and the compliance with inner comfort criteria in the building. The increasing use of glass can be seen as the architectural intention to combine those well-being and energetic principles. The highest transparency can be achieved with point-fitted glass units. Though, insufficient knowledge is present to use point fittings for insulation glass units, which are required to comply with the demand for energy-efficiency. Therefore, research has been carried out to investigate in the load bearing mechanism of different point-fitted insulating glass units in order to find an innovative point fitting connection system for insulating glass units to the steel substructures. This paper presents results of this research campaign and provides information on how to design point-fitted insulating glass units. [less ▲]

In the construction of façades, connections between glass and glass as well as other materials with varying properties, e.g. metals, are currently designed with, inter alia, the application of adhesives. The related analytical evaluation of the load bearing characteristics of these kinds of assemblies requires the correct determination of the adhesives’ properties; knowledge in this field is still incomplete. Therefore an extensive test campaign on the load bearing and displacement behaviour of common structural silicone and UV-acrylic was carried out with the aim, to identify appropriate models to describe their properties under quasi-static loading and for their implementation in numerical analyses. The test program, comparisons between the different adhesive materials and a summarised outcome will be presented in this paper. [less ▲]

In this paper, several reliability analyses of a sheet pile wall in a marine environment were performed, in which the influence of a wide range of corrosion models was assessed. The influence of the corrosion was compared in structures with different conditions (two different sheet pile profiles were used, as well as two values of the sheet pile length and also two different values of the surcharge). To perform the reliability analyses, the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) was used and reliability analyses were performed using a combination of different programs. The effect that the variation of the coefficient of variation v of the probability distributions has on the measured level of safety is not linear. For certain ranges of v, the influence on the safety level is not very significant, whereas in other ranges it causes an abrupt reduction of the safety, meaning that access to data of thickness loss due to corrosion of good quality (that represent reality as accurately as possible) is very important to avoid erroneous conclusions about the safety. Due to the rising cost pressures in the construction industry, it is particularly important to choose efficient design methods to achieve economic structures. The use of the plastic hinge theory may lead to good results within the steel and composite construction industry because cross section- and system reserves can almost fully used. This means for the normal composite beam a redistribution of the bending moment from the support section to the field section. This redistribution causes an increase of the rotation at the composite connection. The presented tests show the influence of the reinforcement (type of reinforcement and reinforcement ratio) to the rotation capacity of the connection. The increased rotation requirements of composite connections in the area of plastic hinges should already be take in to account at planning state. [less ▲]
