L'objectif de la présente étude est de déterminer le poids respectif de différents facteurs socioprofessionnels et psychologiques dans la sortie du chômage. Un suivi longitudinal de 384 chômeurs nouvellement inscrits dans les Services Publics de l'Emploi (SPE) et n'ayant aucun passé de chômage a été réalisé durant un an. Au début de la période, une prise de données a été réalisée par un questionnaire informatisé pour mesurer les variables socioprofessionnelles et psychologiques. The predictive power of socioprofessional and psychological variables on job finding was investigated with a cohort of 384 unemployed people in Luxembourg. The aimwas to assess whether, in statistical profiling, some psychological variables have incremental validity over and above the more commonly used socioprofessional dimensions. For the period from 0 to 6 months and the period from 0 to 12 months, socioprofessional variables measured at the beginning of the unemployment period, allowed classification of three quarters of the subjects. Adding significant psychological dimensions did not improve the prediction in either case. Further analysis was done on persons still unemployed at 6 months (i.e. those who found it more difficult to find a job). For the period from 6 to 12 months, age and sex allowed correct classification of 62.6% of the subjects. Adding five psychological variables (openness, self-efficacy, social anxiety, symptom reduction coping, intelligence) significantly improves this percentage by 12.1 points. In the proposed model, psychological factors therefore only play a role in job finding for unemployed people who have more difficulty in finding a job. L’utilisation de plus en plus répandue du testing assisté par ordinateur (TAO) auprès de différentes populations ne doit pas faire oublier un certain nombre de biais potentiels pouvant créer des différences artificielles entre les sujets. Dès les premières expérimentations du TAO, la familiarité avec l’outil informatique et l’anxiété envers l’ordinateur ont été mises en avant comme de potentielles sources de variation dans les performances enregistrées. Même si maintenant, avec la démocratisation de cet outil, ces biais peuvent paraître moins marqués, il reste des populations ou/et des situations pour lesquelles leur impact reste important. Dans le cadre des Services Publics de l’Emploi, la situation de chômage des personnes tout-venant peut paraître difficilement conciliable avec l’utilisation de l’ordinateur à des fins d’évaluation. Pourtant, même avec des personnes très peu familiarisées avec cet outil, voire le découvrant, des mesures de différentes dimensions de personnalité, d’attitude et d’intelligence ont été réalisées sans rencontrer de difficultés majeures ou de refus. Il est évident qu’un certain nombre d’adaptations des outils et du matériel est nécessaire, mais il semble que l’utilisation du TAO puisse être généralisée. Le présent papier montrera les aménagements qui ont été nécessaires pour rendre possible ces évaluations, des résultats comparés entre évaluations par le TAO sur ces populations et celles de populations dites «non-spécifiques» et les intérêts à généraliser ce type de prises d’informations. We ask the question whether the coding of categorical versus coordinate spatial relations depends on different neural networks showing hemispheric specialization or whether there is continuity between these two coding types. The `continuous spatial coding' hypothesis would mean that the two coding types rely essentially on the same neural network consisting of more general-purpose processes, such as visuo-spatial attention, but with a different weighting of these general processes depending on exact task requirements. With event-related fMRI, we have studied right-handed male subjects performing a grid/no-grid visuo-spatial working memory task inducing categorical and coordinate spatial relations coding. Our data support the `continuous spatial coding' hypothesis, indicating that, while based on the same fronto-parieto-occipital neural network than categorical spatial relations coding, the coding of coordinate spatial relations relies more heavily on attentional and executive processes, which could induce hemispheric differences similar to those described in the literature. The results also show that visuo-spatial working memory consists of a short-term posterior store with a capacity of up to three elements in the parietal and extrastriate cortices. This store depends on the presence of a visible space categorization and thus can be used for the coding of categorical spatial relations. When no visible space categorization is given or when more than three elements have to be coded, additional attentional and executive processes are recruited, mainly located in the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex. Aim: To analyse the relationships between mental health and employment commitment among prisoners and the long-term unemployed (LTU) trying to return to work. Method: Fifty-two of 62 male inmates of a semi-open prison (Givenich Penitentiary Centre, the only such unit in Luxembourg), and 69 LTU registered at the Luxembourg Employment Administration completed a questionnaire exploring: 1) mental health (measured by means of scales GHQ12 and CES-D); 2) employment commitment; 3) availability of a support network, selfesteem, empowerment; and 4) socio-demographic characteristics. Results: Compared with LTU, inmates were younger, more had work experience (54.9% vs 26.1%), and more were educated to only a low level (71.1% vs 58.0%). The link between employment commitment and mental health in the LTU was the opposite of that seen among the prisoners: the more significant the perceived importance of employment, the worse the mental health (GHQ12 p = 0.003; CES-D p < 0.001) of the LTU; in contrast, among prisoners, the GHQ12 showed that the greater the perceived value of work, the lower the psychic distress (p = 0.012). Greater empowerment was associated with less depression in both populations. The education levels of people who did not reach the end of secondary school, whether inmates or LTU, were negatively linked with their mental equilibrium. Conclusion: The two groups clearly need professional support. Future research should further investigate the link between different forms of professional help and mental health. Randomized controlled trials could be carried out in both groups, with interventions to improve work commitment for prisoners and to help with getting a job for LTU. For those LTU who value employment but cannot find it, the best help may be psychological support. [less ▲]
